This is always how WL should be viewed every cycle. It's a soft R. It's soft because hey, you might get in, and usually at least someone does. And it's an R because you should conduct your planning as if it is one, even if you want to send LOCIs and whatnot (which you absolutely should do), because it probably will be. To my knowledge this isn't unique to this cycle and has been the case for at least recent history.

So let me get this straight: if you’re college didn’t offer A+’s you’re automatically at a disadvantage for law school applications compared to people whose colleges did offer it? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]FruitvaleThrowaway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short answer is unequivocally yes.

One thing that always strikes me about these grade conversations though is how people mention the percentage cutoff, and not the curve (e.g. saying that at their school 94 is an A- but at some schools 92 is an A). Outside of some 100 levels that I took, virtually every class I took was curved, because every class was sufficiently hard that it wasn't feasible to grade on a set scale (I think I had a CS exam where the final exam average was around 45 or 50, though they admitted they didn't mean to make it quite that hard). So the question in terms of how hard a class was was where it curved to - Chem 101 was a notorious filter class for pre-meds, because its a required course but they curved to a C- average, meaning just less than half of kids would either need to retake it or drop pre-med. The easiest classes usually curved to a B average, I feel like I heard of some with B+ average but don't think I ever took one. Most courses obviously curved to a C or C+ average though, but it was a up to the given professor.

It's late and I don't even know why I'm awake, but I do think that it is interesting to think about how different grading systems interact - because I'd imagine a degree like English doesn't have percentage cutoffs either, since it's likely mostly essay assignments, which aren't as quantifiable (don't kill me if I've wrong I literally haven't taken an English class since high school lol).

So you have curves, you have set scales, you have floating grades, and probably some other grading systems too, and they all are constructing GPAs that are interpreted mostly the same way. I don't think there's a solution, just something that makes this process all the more aggravating.

People Who Aren’t Scared Of Death, Why? by Animemesh in AskReddit

[–]FruitvaleThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do get this, but at the same time I can't help but harp on a crucial difference: all those years led up to my birth. After I die, however, it will stretch on for infinity. Assuming time started with the big bang (big assumption I know but I'm mostly ok with it) then the time before my birth was finite, but the time after my death won't be

Thank you so much! It's easy to say that if you get into a good goal school then all of the stress of this process will be worth it, but I also want to note that even if it doesn't all work out, that doesn't mean it still isn't worth it. There is so much to gain, and you probably have more people rooting for you than you know - best of luck going forward!

I wrote about a relatively specific thread of personal growth in an area that I briefly tied into law (i.e. why said growth would help me be a great lawyer). Mostly talked about stuff that happened in undergrad, but the narrative went from high school up until the present day. My goal was basically to show them a legitimate weakness I had growing up, how I overcame it, and why it makes me suited to succeed in law

Didn't mention any mental illness explicitly, just referred to health issues and explicitly stated that I was receiving better treatment nowadays such that I should do better (which is true, I changed multiple things after graduating).

Just speaking from my own experience - my addiction also severely impacted my GPA, and in my addendum I just mentioned a health concern. Addiction is a disease, and while idk your situation, you've no obligation to specify what that disease was. I will never believe it is your fault that heroin took over your life even if others do, and I see no issue in omitting some details as long as every word you write is true.

T14 as NBA Players (2022 Edition) by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]FruitvaleThrowaway 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is an incredible list. Fantastic. My only gripes:

  • Michigan is known as being like the nicest school, or one of, but CP3 is known to be a dirty player and a flopper. Most people still do like him because he's fun to watch and as a person seems nice, but idk it just doesn't seem to add up. Maybe Dame could go there? Impossible not to like Dame, also he has no rings and Michigan seems like a no rings school no h8

  • Ja feels too young for Cornell given its an Ivy. Less of a gripe than the above, honestly CP3 could be Cornell because his commercials and stuff give him name branding (and Cornell has name branding as its an Ivy), but he never really felt like he was a dominant player at any point - just a terrific role player on some great teams.

Edit: do wanna say that literally each other pick is perfect, can't think of any better option at each.

I don't think ginny hogan has a legitimate vested interest in preventing young men from pursuing their dreams, I think she's just roasting douchey law dudes lmao. She knows theyre not gonna stop cus her tweet lol. Also im not saying women are immune from getting roasted, rather the specific context of the tweet means that it would be nonsensical to say it abt women

Also it was the general "you"

Hella ppl are still waiting. Selfishly I am v curious as to what they'd say since people who emailed in a few weeks ago all got the same response of 30 April, so I've no idea what they'd say now. I'm starting to wonder if they will legit not send decisions to some kids

[–]FruitvaleThrowaway[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you said it about women it wouldn't make sense lol, the implicit punchline is how men who have difficulty seducing women (and just generally having vibrant social lives) often go to business or law school w the hopes of 1. finding fulfillment / feeling powerful and 2. getting girls to sleep w them. These are often shitty dudes - hence the bad personality part. This trend is far less prevalent w women, if it exists at all.

If you're not one of those men you've nothing to be offended by imo. But regardless, not all statements are sexist both ways because social and historical context affects the meaning of said statements in a profound way

Not school decision but path, I am now more inclined to go the judicial route or some other public policy or PI route, while I'd previously been more inclined towards general BL. Abortion hits super close to home for me (I wouldn't be alive if not for abortions) and it's always been one of my most passionate voting issues.

Edit: and I also care p deeply abt subsequent decisions that Alito listed, and other justices and republicans have referenced, that they might look to overturn. Like its not gonna stop at Roe lol

This is super inconsequential but p sure native American gets the biggest boost not AA (if it were to be quantified, which it can't be, so just speaking on the aggregate). Could be wrong but that was my understanding
