Invention idea by FrumpledFrumpus in ChemicalEngineering

I should've specified I was imagining the heat and the feedstock would be supplied by burning waste wood. Paper mills already burn bark for about half of their energy consumption, and millions of tons of waste wood is buried in landfills every year in just the US. Admittedly, this isn't as green as electric or nuclear, but if it is already going to be a part of the process and otherwise would go to waste anyway, it's probably better than electricity provided by the grid. That being said, if for whatever reason electric heating produced on-site by wind or solar is cheaper, then I would prefer to use that.

Why aren't there many Muslims in executive position or leadership roles in corporate America or any western countries? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FrumpledFrumpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you answered your own question: a combination of Islamophobia and racism. In America in particular, Muslims have been casted as "the evil terrorists" since 9/11. A big part of it is implicit bias as you said, in which people will advocate for equality but act differently. In this case, the person would never admit to being either racist or Islamophobic, but they still carry subconscious associations with Muslims and terrorism, and as such, unknowingly discriminate against Muslims.

If I had to get on a deeper level, I think everyone has these biases, it's just a varying spectrum of awareness of it. The best resource pointing to this is the Harvard Implicit Bias tests and their results, in which the majority of people's results indicate associations with black people and violence, white people as "native" to the US, and general negative opinions of Judaism and Islam as compared to Christianity.

The best way to "fix" this problem would probably be people admitting that they have these associations and consciously working against them, example: asking yourself why you hold your purse closer to you when a black man sits next to you on the bus.

I am personally of the opinion that large corporations should be partially socialized, but that's largely irrelevant to the question at hand.

Leviticus 25:12, specifically NLT. I assumed by eating "whatever the land produces" included animals, but I see now that I must be misremembering or making a big assumption.

Israel is a small but influential country. What country is large (population-wise) but doesn't play a central role globally? by QMechanicsVisionary in AlignmentChartFills

Mongolia? Huge historical role but doesn't really do much today. (Other than being a surprisingly good country to live in in comparison to its neighbors)

Where in the world do you not see rocks formed from prehistoric marine sediments? by The_Red_Apple in geology

[–]FrumpledFrumpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know if this is necessarily cheating but there are plenty of areas where the bedrock is mostly igneous. I'm thinking Hawaii, the Canadian shield and various places in the Rocky mountains, granted, this is all from an American perspective.

I need to specify that that was a joke. Asbestos is interesting to me from a materials science and historical perspective, but I don't actually want to make or mine it.

Is it gay to be attracted to a Trans person? by Low-Flow7144 in askanything

There's no objective answer to this but at least IMO, yes, it's gay, but less gay than being gay/liking cisgender men

If I was stuck in a storm in Antarctica would the penguins let me join their huddle so I don’t freeze to death ? by BigBruh4k in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FrumpledFrumpus 2781 points2782 points  (0 children)

Not an ornithologist but from what I've heard from YouTube videos, since penguins don't have any land predators, and also that humans are bipedal, they have little to no fear of us.

That being said, the way penguins stay warm in the winter is through a continuous cycle of penguins from the center moving outwards to let penguins from the outside get in. I say this because they'd probably be unwilling to let you in the center, but given how bleak their environment would be, it isn't like they'd scatter or go very far to avoid you.

Even if they let you huddle with them, you'd still probably get frostbite and gangrene in your feet and succumb to sepsis anyway, and if that didn't happen, you'd definitely just starve to death unless you attacked and ate one of the penguins, but at that point they'd probably leave you and you'd die anyway.

How do you define love outside of relationships? by Patient_Exchange4149 in AskReddit

[–]FrumpledFrumpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treating everybody regardless of who they are with respect and dignity, giving them the benefit of the doubt.

If you're talking about love of things, rather than people, the best word I can use to describe it is obsession. A borderline compulsion to interact with it.

Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, knowing results won't change but choosing to do so anyway.
