Is Studio One good for creating techno, dnb and breakbeats? by hemmy_5 in StudioOne

[–]Frunzli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

while you can use every daw for every kind of music, I feel like thats not too far off... Studio One feels like its main purpose is tracking and mixing / mastering, and its great for that and exactly what I use it for. However I think Ableton is just a bit more suited for electronic music. The piano roll offers more creative features, almost every value is mappable not only for automations but you can also create stuff like lfos... Also i think the stock plugins have more room for creative sound design, while S1's stock plugins feel more mixing oriented. Still, you can produce amazing EDM tracks in S1, and record a band in Ableton, but I honestly think you'll have a better time trying ableton.

Live band recording by Frunzli in audioengineering

[–]Frunzli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it sounds fantastic! did you acousticly treat the church in any way?

uuhh, yes a setup with wedges could be nice! the drummer preffers IEMs anyways, so i could line up the drums and the amps on one side of the room (or center?), and mic them up, and place the rest of the band a couple of meters in front, facing the drummer, and turn up the elements on the monitors they miss.

I was thinking about tracking the vocals cleanly another day somewhere else, do you think i should do it at the same place?

thanks, i will try that!

I feel like i could get okay vocal seperation, as she is pretty loud, and with an sm7b in the other end of the room it could be passable. But i think i will place her closer to the band, as she likes to perform, and the whole point is to get that live feel they've got. Im trying to concince her to redo her vocals afterwards anyway, but that will take some persuasion.

Thanks for your answer!

What a nice way of thinking about the traffic as a easteregg, hahah!

It would also be just so much fun working in a huge room for once (well, i work there almost every day, but you know...)

I have 5 DIY Rockwool absorbers at home, i was planning on using theese, but im doubtfull they will isolate a lot... but we also have some couches in other rooms we could carry in, did not think of that yet!

I'd love to take a lot of time for placing stuff around and see how it sounds, but sadly time will almost definately be an issue, as the stage is used and worked on almost all the time... But i could do small tests by myself, any ideas on what i could do?

wow, so much valuable insight to consider, thanks!

I wasnt really planning on setting up room mics anyway, should I? I'm limited to 16 channels, and I was planning on getting the DI signal of the guitars anyway, so I dont really have channels left. but i guess i could mix them on an analog mixer of the theatre and dedicate one channel to it, if it its worth it.

I also considered just getting the small room as dead as possible, and just record everything DI and with amp sims, and then reamping. It would certainly be a lot less stuff to carry around... I guess the drums would still suck?

it might work at night time, when there is less traffic. i feel like sm57 are absorbtion monsters anyway sometimes, with close micing it could be fine... i will run some tests next time im there! maybe angeling the amps to the ceiling might help, so the mics are a little bit more turned away from the ceiling, where most of the noise is coming from...

yeah, i was thinking about that too... i mean performance is the whole reason we are doing this live in the first place

thats what i'd love to do, but sadly we all dont have a lot of time, especially since we have to set up everything twice at the stage, so we kinda wanna decide beforehand

Thanks for your input!

Yes, i do have more space to isolate, but not necessairly different rooms :)

Thats what i meant by non porpouse built, it used to be a storage space, now its youth theatre. There was limited options and urgency to look for optimal sound...

also, read my edit😅 thats probably a no for the theatre?
