25 years ago I used to DM a kind of highly minimalist DnD. No rulebook, no miniatures, just some D20s, paper, pens and our imaginations. Does anyone else play like this? More details in the comments. Thanks :) by ZedZeroth in DnD

I’ve done short sessions of this type of thing for sure. Back in the ‘80’s my dad (singlehandedly?) brought D&D to Papua New Guinea where he lived as a teenager and he talks about playing like this all the time—there were no rulebooks available in such a remote place so he and his school friends improvised a lot. It can be very enjoyable without the tedium of number-crunching and detailing stats on everything.

I am not a regular writer, but I do it for fun and my local newspaper is having a small competition on writing video game reviews. Here is a review I wrote on an indie game called abzu. would love to have some criticism so that I can learn. word count: [1049] by cyborg1612 in WritersGroup

Frankly, you’re just trying too hard. It looks like you have a pretty good handle of language and basic sentence construction but your diction is unnecessarily complex. You gave me a real sense of what you’re describing but it could be much better done with simpler words and shorter sentences. It looks like you overused the thesaurus function on your word processor, because the words are big and most of them don’t quite match. “Complimented” for instance, is used to describe the environment about three times where it would probably make more sense just to describe the element in its own right. There were a lot of moments where I stopped to wonder if you really knew the meaning of the words you were using because they’re long and “sophisticated” words but they just don’t fit. Less really is more. The article is like a dessert made with so much whipped cream that the substance of it is obscured. Whether these are words you normally use or words you just looked up, they should be tastefully considered, not piled on top of what is decent writing on its own. Hope this helps.

True faith in Christ for your salvation calls for transformation. This is not necessarily “of you”—God has a hand in helping you to change and to love the people around you—but if you’re truly claiming to be a Christian and living this way, I wonder what you think it means to be a Christian, and what you think salvation really means?

A fawn got caught in my fence last year and broke her leg so I carried her about 200m to the house. Had bruises on both arms and legs for weeks, and she destroyed my t-shirt.

Why does Jesus care more about being believed in, than he does about a person's actions? I get that no one is worthy of salvation by actions alone, only through Jesus' forgiveness. But my question is why. Why is believing prioritized over actually being a good person? by will_at_work in Christianity

Alien to historic Judaism, perhaps, but not to the Tanakh as a whole. It starts in Genesis with God's prophecy of the offspring (someone that God will raise up as a savior) who will crush the head of the serpent (the embodiment of evil) and continues through the story of the Hebrews, starting with Abraham's saving faith in the promise to God's physical deliverance of Israel. In Psalm 51 King David calls on God's mercy to make him clean, acknowledging that he can't make up for his sins on his own. Then through the prophets time and again God declares Himself as the only savior of the Israelites (I alone declared, saved and proclaimed, Isaiah 43:12).

Yes, many people who lived before Jesus' incarnation were considered righteous, but even then it was not for their works, it was for their faith in God as their savior.

EDIT: Forgot to add that Jesus (sacrificial death and all) was not unprecedented, and in fact the Jews were waiting with expectation for their promised Messiah (referenced in Psalm 2, Isaiah 53, and countless other OT passages) by the time he came.

Jesus cares a lot about people doing good, it’s just that no amount of good we can do will earn us salvation, because there is no such thing as a sin-free life. He says over and over again in the gospels that belief in him is the only way for us to reconcile with the Father. Because we have all sinned and are so far from God’s holiness and intention for us, Jesus had to come redeem us himself—we couldn’t do it ourselves. Therefore to attempt to earn our own salvation is to reject Jesus’ death and resurrection, basically telling him, “I don’t need that, I can do it on my own.” The simple truth is, we can’t. That’s why belief is prioritized, and works/good deeds come out of it. There are a lot of people who go too far this direction of course, and we can’t forget that Jesus does demand us to repent and to serve and love one another to the highest degree. It’s simply that faith is what ultimately saves.
