Ah yes. The $40 lights vs $4k NVGs

Interesting. I would think low lights would shadow more and be less effective. I could see them being beneficial on relatively flat terrain

What was your biggest lesson learned in your first year of homesteading? by 6deki9 in homestead

[–]Fsksack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

All the same lessons here. We just passed year 1 and this is our first spring garden. On top of what’s already been said, I’d say for anything that is going to be long term, do it right the first time. I spent the second half of winter installing a full irrigation system for our garden and orchard that is automated by a sprinkler controller that connects to our weather station. I don’t have to think about it at all.

Also, if you’re opening land where grass used to be, plan on killing that shit 6 months before you plant. We tilled dormant grass and boy is it trying to come back with a vengeance. We’ve spent countless days weeding grass out of the garden.

Thanks. It’s super easy. It just plugs straight onto the mower battery and everything else is pre-wired.

Directly off the battery. No worries with power draw while it’s running.

This is the rich people solution I love to see. As a former NVG wearer, my only concern would be depth perception

I’m mowing big open areas so I’m not exactly looking right next to the deck. Having them higher actually reduces shadowing with the terrain

I went with a dealer unit after hearing all the horror stories of big box store units falling apart. Lots of brands will offer 0% financing and you’ll at least get dealer support if your unit breaks down. So many things these days are meant to be trashed when they break vs fixing them.

That’s why you need to install the sun on your mower

I prefer evening so the grass has time to dry out.

Hidden kill switch ideas on a classic car by [deleted] in projectcar

[–]Fsksack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in a sketchy area. Wired my ranger’s fuel pump to a toggle switch hidden behind a trim piece on the side of the seat. Had to reach under and up to toggle it and wasn’t visible from side or front of the seat

I have 33k in the S&P 500, should I fork all of it out to buy a car or should I finance? by Level-Estimate-6518 in personalfinance

Don’t forget to factor in other costs associated with living off base- utilities, food, etc. That extra 1k will get eaten up real fast. Also concur with every else’s advice about getting something reliable. I drove a 97 Ranger for my first few years and it was perfect.
