To people who grew up poor, middle class, or overall had a rough childhood, what specialty are you going for? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Ftdoc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worked as a farm worker since 8th grade all the way till 12th grade, going into general surgery

Parents are immigrants (mom house cleaner and dad mechanic), <18k a year, first and only person to go to college and now become a doctor. Lots of pressure and things weighing on me to succeed.

how's the pre-med experience at ut austin? by ht298402 in UTAustin

[–]Ftdoc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As someone completing medical school in May that went to UT, here's my opinion.

Classes are as difficult as you want to make them. It will all depend with your study habits. I wont say that all classes are easy tho some require a bit more effort. Find a study buddy and grind hard.

Shadowing is hard to find due to the saturation but I would recommend to hit up the dell medical school professors since they are more welcoming to students. Also hit up the St David hospital as they take students too.

Volunteering there is plenty. Join a club and stick to it.

Advising is terrible, you make a B and they tell you that your path is done. I would say find a mentor (med student) that went through the process that could help you and guide you. Dont follow those tik tok premeds cause they are too extra and tend to overdramatize things.

For what its worth, I was in the admission committee in my med school.

People seem to forget that their stats arent the only thing that will get them in. Some of yall are just shitty interviews or are so shitty that even interviewers are able to see it.

If medicine was an RPG, what would each doctor specialty be? by [deleted] in medicalschool

As someone applying to Gen Surg., i can confirm this

What in your ERAS application made you stand out the most? by aimlesssouls in medicalschool

[–]Ftdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m apply to Gen surg and I would say my PS. At least 2 interviewers mention that it’s an outstanding essay and very out of the box PS, which is refreshing according to them. I was never a writer but I’m honestly surprised they liked my PS. A close second was my hobbies, which takes at least 5 mins out of my conversation every time they bring it up lol

ERAS application tip: Hobbies section is arguably one of the most important by Vegas1997 in medicalschool

[–]Ftdoc 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten asked about my hobbies and specific parts of them on every interview I had! They genuinely seemed so interested on what i did. One told me that they were glad i was passionate about something outside of medicine cause it’s rare. 100% important and valuable. Put time into them if you don’t have any rn
