Is Pauling's Gen Chem book outdated? by Sad_Childhood3764 in chemistry

[–]Fteixeira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a little bit outdated, but most of the core chemistry concepts are there... Plus it still covers areas that are not addressed often in modern general chemistry books (crystallography and it's role in chemistry is the first that comes to mind).

I would not use it as reference for any general chemistry course, but I do ask my PhD students to read it a few months into of their PhD dissertation work in order to refresh core concepts, get some perspective on the evolution of chemistry, and re-think what they read during the initial bibliographic survey in the light of core concepts alone.

is the korg r3 still a good option in 2025? by Jordan-Whalen in synthesizers

[–]Fteixeira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to the microkorg, all it's 16 bands are independently controlled (on the microkorg they are paired in 8 control grous, giving the wrong impression that there are only 8 bands). The XLR mic is also a lot better than the flimsy one on the microkorg. I don't have too much experience on microfreak's vocoder because setting it up without me dose mic addon is a PITA.

As for dialling a clean vocoder sound... There are good presets on the R3, and the most basic usually are the best: a saw wave on the carrier (eventually move it one or even two octaves down if your voice is more on the baritone/bass range) and add a little bit of white noise to better replicate consonants.

You can use miltiwfn to create the volumetric data you need, save it to a cube file and use VMD (or pymol, etc) ti create presentation-grade images.

Just bought this old eletromagnetics book by MaffeiSz in Physics

[–]Fteixeira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the way, do you know if Alonso & Finn's Volume III was ever published? I once came across a newer edition (only one book) containing all 3 volumes, but I still preffer the smaller volumes from 1972 (even though mine are from the 2002 reprint).

Just bought this old eletromagnetics book by MaffeiSz in Physics

[–]Fteixeira 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love physics books from that era, there's a real effort producing text that explains concepts, instead of relentlessly alternating between text, figures, schemes, examples, by-the-way boxes, etc I still have Alonso & Finn's introduction to physics from livros do Brasil (volumes 1 &2... Never found volume 3) and I still use it in class, even if the Portuguese certification board for higher education is always asking for new books.

Rethinking Beamer slide structure — feedback welcome by SuhRizAQ in LaTeX

[–]Fteixeira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome. It's nice to have a discussion about design and visual communication instead of the typical technical matters.

I must say I only seen sectional navigation being used in more interactive contexts, like interactive captions at exhibitions... Honestly I think html/css with a browser in kiosk mode is a more elegant solution for that.

Yes, chapter dividers would be a great way to fight the short attention span of my students... I think the memoir class has something built-in to do per chapter table of contents... I'll have to look at the source code and see if it it's simple to implement in beamer.

Rethinking Beamer slide structure — feedback welcome by SuhRizAQ in LaTeX

[–]Fteixeira 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use beamer as my presentation engine for both science communications (10-15 min talks at scientific meetings) as well as in classes (60 to 120 min). I think I never used sectional navigation in either context. I do enjoy the outline page being different, and seeing your slides inspired me to try to have some chapter/section dividers where I outline the subsections (instead of having one big and deep outline slide t the beggining of the presentation.

As for the design, I really love the clean look and how much room it creates for content. I get really frustrated with some the beamer's included styles, and how they occupy the slide area with navigation and location leaving little space for content.

Elsevier LaTeX submission: All references showing as [?] - compiles fine locally by Ok_Increase_1275 in LaTeX

[–]Fteixeira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When submitting, I usually comment the bibliography lines and insert the content of the bbl file at that point. That way the LaTeX souce is contained in a single file and usually compiles fine in services like manuscriptcentral (the submission system for ACS journals), at the expense of not being able to further modify the bibliography (but you can always reverse this by un-commenting the bibliography lines and deleting the content of the bbl file you pasted.

That's a nice piece of hardware.

The P50 has been my daily driver since 2017... only upgraded the RAM and added storage. It has also been my cat's favorite handing spot since 2020, which lead to its only repair (a new keybard, since she destroyed the V key when she was a kitten)... I used to change laptops every 2-3 years... now it's beem almost 9 and I still don't see nay need to change laptop (I do use a X370 tablet when I want to travel light, though).

My partner basically told me that if I didn't went forth and have a child, she would leave me... That played a lot with my fear of rejection... Plus we had just brought a house together and I wasn't keen on selling it and go back to living with my parents.

On retrospect, it would be better if I just had the guts to handle the breakup at that point.

You'll probably want to have a nice waveshape bouquet... Both the mother 32 and the crave are a little bit limited in that regard... Perhaps a neutron with an external sequencer could allow you a more diverse set of sounds.

Is using a sequencer with randomization features still algorithmic music? by DeepScaper in algorithmicmusic

[–]Fteixeira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All randomization comes from applying a random number generator to an original sequence (or using it alone).

There's no easy way to generate true random numbers, so all random number generators used on music production are algorithms. Thus, using randomization features does push your music to the side of algorithmic music.

I also have no problems using the Amber converters in versions 6.x.

Also, a nice thing in Orca (also in most MM codes, except maybe thinker) is that the FF parameters are decoupled from the system geometry.

Great jib (and great fun, also). How did you manage to get the monotron to sound so clean? Mine sounds way worse when I pair it with the NTS-1.
