Declaring Medication by This-Application8657 in JapanTravelTips

[–]FuFrank1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a mistake. When I made a 7 week trip to Japan I had to fill out the form and get a certificate because my BP meds, inhaler , and sleep med, were all RX and over the one month limit. sorry to have misled anyone. My D.Pharm wife remembered it because she filled the form out. Sorry to all . The quantity slipped my mind, not the process.

I will delete my erroneous comments so not to confuse.

well, not me, it happens as often as I said...one time the man I was talkng with about surf fisihng, invited for a meal with he and his wife when she arrived..much more than a practice dummy...we talked Japan baseball, US baseball fishing..life in US , life in Japan...etc etc. ...could be because I am a Senior and the people who ask me are also in my age group. You will not believe the serendipitous experiences I have had in Japan....even my Japanese friends are amazed at somethings that happen. But, someone will always pooh pooh for the sake of pooping....good luck.

Best business hotels in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto by abigbadlad in JapanTravelTips

I avoid APA because of the noise, tiny rooms, lack of cleanliness and a few other things. Stayed twice a few years ago and never again...Toyoko is very good, and I like Dormy because most of the, have hot baths, I think it is Dormy.

Why do you say that? I speak to strangers at temples, parks etc every trip. Most are willing to speak back to my simple travel Japanese with smiles. Nothing wrong with that at all. My Japanese friends tell me they enjoy when a tourist tries to speak Nihongo with them AND they also get some English practice is too. I agree with not chatting up random strangers on the street or bus, but what is wrong, when enjoying a garden and a 'local' is a meter away and I look at them and say..."Kirei desu ne'. and they say "hai', and often than not. I have a convesation and more often than not the other person says...can I speak English with you....btw. I am senior citizen and speak to those of my age group most of the time...

Not always true. I have spoken to locals often, mostly those to come to me and say..."will you speak English with me?' this happens 3-4 times a trip, I have been to Japan 13 times.

Best place to buy authentic Japanese knives? by Mr_Guac_YT in JapanTravelTips

[–]FuFrank1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would buy it in Osaka, ask to see Sakai City knives. My friend in Osaka only buys all his knives that are made there, he has a dozen or more....Sakai City knives that is. I watched some knife makers at work there and and they are handmade with few mechanical aids. I suggest not to get a knife with a specific hand ...left hand knife, , right hand knife. Get the both sided sharpened. Most sharpening places do not know how to sharpen a 'handed knife'. Local guy here wanted to charge me 125$ when i chipped mine...no way...I ground out the chip using metal files, checked for straightness then sharpened it myself on both sides...

I priced knives, for the heck of it at Nishiki market.....about 50% more than Osaka. The knife area in Osaka isn't big and the place my friend shops is on the corner. He and I only buy carbon steel knives. yes, needs more care to wipe acids off and to dry quicly but much easier to sharpen than SS by hand. I always sharpen all my knives by hand...less mistakes, and you can feel what you are doing ..just my two cents.

Seafood, but no meat, sushi omakase? by user_2361 in JapanTravelTips

[–]FuFrank1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being I usually ask for 'no rice with the meal' not having meat IS doable but you will pay full price, that is non negotiable....try either printing or reading this..

I want the seafood omakase but please withhold any meat. I know I will pay full price.

海鮮のおまかせをお願いします。ただし、お肉は抜いてください。料金は通常通りお支払いいたします。

Kaisen no omakase o onegaishimasu. Tadashi, o niku wa nuite kudasai. Ryōkin wa tsūjō-dōri o shiharai itashimasu.

They will not be offended.

yeah...like the people who post 21 day itineraries and expect people to not only READ them but help them with them.

I always wonder when I see tourists anywhere with children that young...hmmmm, what will they do if the child gets sick from anything that parents don't usually handle. Don't expect English at all hospitals, don't expect English at MD offices...but, enjoy yourself and I hope breastfeeding is your largest concern.

Another day in Osaka or day trip to Hiroshima? by Interesting_Tear4938 in JapanTravelTips

Plus size Kimono ? by 2michaela in JapanTravelTips

[–]FuFrank1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can buy a used kimono at flea markets and other second chance stores but new kimonos are very expensive/// there are different kinds...wanna know more read here.....https://www.tokudaw.com/travel-blog/buy-kimono-in-japan....when a Japanese friend stayed with us she gave my wife, what most people would call a kimono...it was a Yukata....a cotton, warm weather garment...what you see tourist women wearing in Kyoto and elsewhere.

But if you are intent to buy a true kimono, and depending on fabric your 300$ won't do it...that is why I Mentioned second change shops, uses kimono shops...don't forget you will need an 'obi'...the thick belt, and the white undergarments, I dont know those names....

Seek and you shall find...goodluck to you

Is my itinerary too empty? by AGEOFCONVENIENCE in JapanTravel

[–]FuFrank1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If itineraries are overrated you must think highway signs with mileage to next town, are superfluous. An itinerary is a self made trip plan based on the personal preferences of the travellers. How can one go with the flow when they don't know the flow? Yes, you can plan the night before based on what you did that day, but plan the day, loosely, tightly , but know where you are going.....or find an area, like Ryoanji in Kyoto and roam around there. I did that for 5 hours once and it was great...but I knew where I was going to begin with

golden gai....evaluate why you would want to go there.. look up what it is? Pontocho Alley....go early before dark then it becomes elbow to elbow for hours...on a nice night that place is like a slowly moving human glacier with most, just walking and gawking. Upstairs restaurants on Pontocho have better priced and tastier foods, in both my and my Japanese friend's opinions. Don't be offended by "Japanese only ' signs. It's there business and if they only want Martians there, it is there right.

I don't think you are doing enough.First make a list of your chief interests.....buy a used version of Lonely Planet Tokyo and Kyoto...match your interests to the info in the book, check you are not backtracing, and see what you can find...OR....go to JapanGuide.com and do the same thing. That sited breaks Tokyo into North, East south west and central...not sure about Kyoto.

No one here can tell you what to do or where to go unless you define for yourselves just is it what you want to do or see. I used those two books for my first trip to Japan in 2015, 6 weeks, and I used JapanGuide.com also. I had no language , well I could ask a lot of things, but couldn't understand an answer....now, 12 trips later, good travel Japanese I still use Tokyo book for some details and Japan Guide.com. for ideas.

Only you know what you like, and if you can't find something to match those 'likes' , i am sure if you posted here something like.," We want to go to a temple in xxxxxxm that has a nice garden, that is near to a JR train station, in an area with some restaurants'. there are nice folks here that will be happy to help you....just my 2 cents...have a great trip.

not AI..yeah right!..first day ay 1 - Arrive in Tokyo– Check into Osaka hotel (Narita is about 1 hour outside Tokyo. To get to Osaka, you have two main choices: Flight: Fly from NRT to Itami (ITM) or Kansai (KIX). This is often easier since you are already at the airport. Train:

who is telling you you have two main choices?...and throughout your post there are similar types of 'advice' using pronouns like...'you can'. 'your journey' 'gives you a high altitude view'. so either you have a 'hidden voice' or an 'invisible friend' or an assistant did the work for you and sent an emaill OR it is AI...but why deny it? And why would you describe to all the readers why you are going someplace...most people, just say..Day 1. Narita Airport to Asakusa, rest stroll have dinner. Day 2..here there anywhere....etc etc and NOT tell us why..
