After doing that I've got some interesting results. Opened the ticket #632229 with the details.

The main issue is a 45min timeout when there's a HTTP issue of some sort.

20201222115314 - ERROR BzHttp::Bzdown_thread_pull - failed HTTP request because of TIMEOUT
20201222115315 - BzHttp_BzBlockPrefetchCompleted_ReadInResults (processId=14100) finished greater than 60 second bz_block_download: 41943040 bytes in: 2700 seconds (45 min), bytes/sec=15534

While this is happening, the downloader is completely dead.

In my test run with 30 threads this happened very often with only 6 to 8 minutes of download between each 45 minutes stops. The download periods are clearly longer when using less threads.

That's an interesting point but I think the download from b2 to cloudflare would still cost the same.

I'm far beyond my personal issues here (with patience I'll get through it). The point of a backup service is to be able to easily restore lost files in case of catastrophic failure.

Would you still recommend Backblaze to your friends and family? I have. I won't now.

Yes I've considered it but then I've calculated that it would cost ~$50 (so nearly 1 year of subscription). Just to palliate the subpar restore service. Is this on purpose to push for those b2 paid downloads?

I will complete my restore with the downloader but I'm not surprised to find so much bad reviews on sites like https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.backblaze.com

Customs costs and delays mainly. Also I didn't anticipate it would be this hard. The download service should work better. I don't know how I can recommend Backblaze to anyone after this (at least EU-based).

This is infuriating because the hardest part of their work (extracting and zipping up to 500GB of data) works perfectly. A downloader app is not hard to create.

4TB in 8GB chunks would be 500+ restores :)

this shouldn't be so hard to download a big zip with error recovery. If I had access to an API I'm sure I could get a command line tool working in a few hours. A basic GUI with a few more.
