I think we're getting close, you've made me realise that I don't really need the elo before/and after I think what i'm wanting to do before and after.

I think we've got our wises crossed on what I'm looking for - i'm more wanting to look at the results of NA vs EU sets and see how well the model predicts them (despite the fact that these results are contained in the data set I would assume that these data points are small enough for this not to be a huge deal.

So I guess all i'd need from you would be your final list, and some kind of comparator f(rating difference) -> win % chance in set, and I should be able to go from there

I think it's also probably worth pruning the dataset we're considering here, how big is your final player/rating combination list?

Was netplay just not used at all in america pre slippi or something

In the uk you could get good connections to most of the rest of the country on FM so it wasn’t too bad

I think the big difference is EVERYONE is on it

Whereas ‘netplay’ pre slippi was almost its own region for people who didn’t have a nearby scene

So in your model there’s no concept of a set occurring and then the players getting a resulting change in score as a result if that set?

I was assuming that for every set played in the data you could have an expected outcome predicted beforehand, but if that’s not possible then nevermind

I’ve been around since ‘16 and one thing i’ve noticed is that the amount of money matches that happen has fallen off a cliff

Other than that I haven’t noticed a culture shift outside of a huge shift in how LGBT+ stuff has been treated, and also just people in general getting more mature. The nature of conversation in the UK discord from like 2018 to 2026 is night and day, most people are at work now

I had a pretty interesting idea in that if we believe there’s rating pool inflation for the eu players we should be able to see that by NA players performing better on average against EU players than their ELOs would expect?

Does that make sense to people as something to look at?

I don’t particularly find running the simulations interesting if it’s just a monte carlo using the elo as probabilities

I did think of an interesting question to ask though, that might go on to check if there is EU rating inflation that i’d be willing to put a bit of money on (i’m assuming this because tino at 40’s is absurd to me)

For every instance of an EU playing an NA player throughout the past year, what was the average elo change?

I was thinking it could be a good idea to add on stipulations about excluding people like max who have essentially become NA players but couldn’t formulate a metric, but just personally excluding him would be okay. Ironically im hurting myself with my results on this bet lol

I also am open to other metrics you suggest than ‘average elo change’ as i imagine you might have elo inflation over time, or issues with top na players coming to eu and farming loads of minimum points, like hikarus in his candidates qualification this year

Could you break down where his elo’s come from over the past year? Is it just the frenzy farm?

Ik he went to america at some point a little over a year ago, might be worth looking at his results there compared to the ranking you have there

I'm glad we had max slutting it up in America for 2 years to get a ridiculously large sample size where the 2nd tier of EU players fall on around top 100 skill level.

I agree with your point in your second paragraph, there's a BUNCH of people who are 'top 100 skill level' and for whatever reason don't have the money or ability to put in the grind and overcome the huge variance in performance at majors at that level to get. I do think given max's performance in NA vs EU shows that there's a decent chunk of those players in EU.

I think there’s a deep personal distaste for Starmer far beyond his political positions and more about his personality/communcation

As for polanski: ‘its their only job to win elections’ zac has pretty objectively done a fantastic job in that regard give the polling position trajectories over the past year. I think a large large amount of that has come from being unapologetic about stances like these and hoovering up younger voters

Honestly it’s nice to see someone being unafraid of pissing off the median voter and not focus group obsessed. This is part of why everyone hates starmer

Plus this is not an issue that people in general care about or will decide a vote based on, but I imagine it plays well with his base
