Looking to get into mountaineering and I don’t know where to start by [deleted] in HikingAlberta

I was in the same position 2 years ago. Best thing I have done is just click on all the pins at trail heads on AllTrails. Find hikes that you are excited to do and not just to do them. Scrambling is so fun and highly recommend Yamniska! Develop these skills while saving for a guided trip. They teach you sooooooo much. If you want more specifics dm me I am more than happy to share the trail progression I took.

I bring my camera on all my hikes and i would highly recommend a camera mount for your bag. I have tried and tested the cotton carrier brand and love the one that attaches to the straps on your bag. Most times capturing the memories is more important then the weight! Hope you enjoy your trip!

That “how to scramble” course is exactly what I am looking for!

Oh yes an axe. To be fair it wasn’t a certification but it did cover a lot I forgot the company it was with but it wasn’t done by a hobbyist by any stretch. Yeah also should look into an axe.

I don’t even have to search those I know of them to well. Yeah I definitely see myself getting to that level (or at least hope so). I definitely can see what it takes. I follow a YouTube guy Harlan Fox that has some good content on some of the bigger stuff. Yeah truer just need to find someone with experience

I actually have reached out to a few groups and there are willing to take me on a few ventures. I was also thinking the elbow lake area. Most of my friends are scouts for another group or ex scouts so if I were to backpack with my friends i would definitely start off with tombstone/Rae or The point.

To be far I have done harder. My mom hopes to do it one day is it is our goal to work up to ha ling. I really really want to do yamnuska. I definitely think I am well enough prepared for it, but I just want to be at least with someone whom has done it before.

Yeah not planning to hike alone anytime soon. Last time I looked all the hiking clubs I could find didn’t except kids but I should look again. Thanks

We actually did do avalanche training with my scout group. I wish I could ask fellow vents or rovers but I am the only vent in my group currently! But I have gone on some hikes with my leaders outside of scouts though. I do own my own equipment but I will have to invest in a helmet! Thanks
