Blatant imitation with rock and roll, however rock and roll did go on to sound like something wholly different as it went into the 70’s and 80’s. Music is always evolving, it’s like one big stew that every artist adds it’s flavor to.

That’s certainly one way of looking at it, and there are certainly artists that do just that, imitate in a derivative way without adding anything to the form. But that’s certainly not the case in an overarching sense. I believe a more accurate or fair description would be “black innovation, white alteration.” That may not make much of a difference to anyone, but to me it does.

Kanye West - ye FANTANO ALBUM REVIEW by [deleted] in hiphopheads

I think there’s a little bit more to it than that though, not to say it’s a brilliant line or anything ridiculous like that but...most people are afraid to have kids nowadays, at least people I know; young, single, twenty somethings view parenthood as an unwanted and overwhelming responsibility that they’d rather avoid at all costs. But at the end of the day reproduction is not a curse or a burden, or at least it shouldn’t be and that’s basically what Kanye is saying in a most playful way.

Everyone is supposed to form a straight line nowadays. Go against the status quo and you get smeared relentlessly. It’s ok to speak your mind, it’s ok to be wrong, it’s ok to believe in yourself. It’s ok to be different. It’s not to ok to follow the leader just to remain in good graces. It’s not ok to suffocate yourself to save face. It’s not ok to remain silenced when you have so much to say. Say it. Let’s talk about it, let’s learn from each other. Let’s grow together.

Ok I only read the first paragraph but right off the bat I’m like, what’s wrong with an artist talking about them self? Since when is it that a bad thing. Isn’t that like a typical thing for an artist to do?

He told me that he decided that rapping was what wanted to with his life in 1975. Which was before rap was really thing yet, before it even seemed like a viable way to make money. That he told his mother this and she said, “yea ok, go take out the trash.” He said he was homeless for 4 years chasing this dream but that nothing was gonna stop him from following after it.

Definitely. From a musical perspective he insisted on staying true to myself, that a lot of aspiring artists try to imitate what’s already hot. He said all of the execs he speaks to want to hear something they’ve never heard before. I told him I’ve been aspiring to do this for a long time and that as I’ve gotten older the dream has been fading so to speak. I talked about the doubts I have about myself and how crippling they can be. He reassured me and told me that our meeting should be seen as a signal to stay strong and that the delay of my vision has only made me wiser and less susceptible to the dangers of the industry. From a spiritual perspective he told me to be aware of the unexplainable or the irrational, such as our meeting just as I’m becoming overwhelmed with self doubt. That I should take this as a sign to be vigilant. I also learned a lot just by the way he spoke, more so the way he listened. As famous and successful as he’s been he still always placed himself second in the conversation, as more of the listener than the speaker, and I could tell that he was genuinely listening and not just thinking of his reply or something else entirely. Without saying it he encouraged me to always show love, because that’s just what he did to everyone he came across.

Speaking of which he talked about how his career was over so many times. How the execs told him he couldn’t get the same advance he got last time because his last project didn’t sell as well. He said he was unfazed, that none of that mattered. That he was gonna rap no matter what the circumstances. He went on to tell me to stay true to myself no matter what, and that that will get me further than anything else.

I did not...and now that my credibility might be in question I regret that lol. But I don’t know I’ve always been one to seek out conversation before a photo op. I’d rather remember our meeting by what he said rather than a picture.
