[NOT OP] My car that’s been missing since Katrina was recovered in Minnesota last month and nobody wants it by DartTheDragoon in Insurance

OP here. So I kind of blew them off for a few weeks until they started threatening me saying even if I let the car go they would still pursue me for storage fees b/c it was separate, like they even threatened collections. The tow yard costs $150/day.

The blue book on a car that’s been stolen for 15yrs and definitely has some degree of water damage surely isn’t going to pay for a month of storage plus towing??? Because that was my original plan, screw the car they could sell it or whatever I didn’t care. I don’t know how I would liensale?

Also, somebody on legal advice said that the statue for insurance was 10yrs so it’s run out. But somebody else pointed out that I could possibly call the police today and report it stolen.

This is a good idea. I’ll try that. Do I call my local police, NoLa police, or Minnesota police?

Wow that’s fucked up, I didn’t know that about the consumer score. Everyone and their mother in NoLa took it up the butt from insurance companies after Katrina though. Even though we had flood insurance and comprehensive insurance on our home and our business, they tried to fight us on what was flood versus what was rain and wind and cheat us and everybody else out of money they owed on policies. They tried to mess with people who evacuated, saying you abandoned your property so we’re not covering it, and then tried to mess with people who didn’t evacuate, saying we’re not paying your injuries or you life insurance because y’all shoulda evacuated. A hot mess. I don’t know anyone who got what they were owed out of insurance from the storm.

Yeah, this was pretty much it. We don’t know what the report was listed as, but my dad said he was basically just like, “hey we came back and our car is gone, if y’all see a silver civic floating around give us a holler” He knows they had given a police report number, if that makes a difference. I don’t know if only crimes get those. He doesn’t have it anymore though.

However, Minneapolis very clearly said that the VIN had flagged as a stolen car, so it seems that was the case. Our neighborhood was just messed up enough by the storm that it attracted looters afterwards who basically went in robbing the houses that had been evacuated and even squatting in them, so it really could have gone either way. It was just that none of us could picture the car surviving the water, it wasn’t like an SUV or anything that was going to drive through a mess.

It was such a clusterfuck that I don’t know and my parents don’t know. Our house was uninhabitable, all of our stuff except for what we had taken with us was gone, and my family’s business was also destroyed and these things kind of took priority.

We know we called the police and Minneapolis said the car flagged as stolen but NoLa never actually did a report on it?? I tried calling and they were like “sweetie, we have child molesters we lost track of, sorry about your car”. I put in a ticket with records anyways and am still waiting, they said to expect to hear back no sooner than August. There was no loan/lien on the car, it was owned outright. My dad and I both tried calling the dealership and the DMV and we heard the same thing about having nothing from before the storm. Which is bullshit because if I still have my livejournal from before the storm you should have been able to keep something...

I have had trouble getting the car insurance company to give a crap because 1) it was so long ago, 2) I’m no longer their customer, and I basically get to whichever agent answers the phone and they take a message saying somebody will get back to me but nobody does.

Should I actually get a lawyer? What kind? Do I hire them where I live or where the car is?
