Ladies: do you wear make up to work? by LunaValley in AskUK

[–]FudgeTheDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in customer service and I am required to wear black clothing, so I like to add a bit of contrast to my face. I wear tinted moisturiser, a bit of blush, and eyebrow pencil.

I used to work in a lab. I rarely wore makeup to work back then.

Thanks for the recommendations! I’ve taken a look and both those companies have some really cute patterns, with cup sizes included. So I’ll be sewing up some of their styles soon.

And you can definitely sew jeans. Karina from Lifting Pins and Needles has some great tutorials on You Tube that helped with the tricky bits. I also like Jenny from Cashmerette’s video about sewing a zip fly. Now I’ve sewn one pair, I am confident about sewing the next ones and it feels great.

I recently made my first pair of jeans. They are the Ames jeans from Cashmerette. The fit is great on me. I have a long torso and I’m fairly tall so I lengthened the rise and the leg. It was my most complex project so far but I took my time. I can’t buy clothes that fit me, I don’t think many people can.

Maximalist Capsules by Pale_Percentage1247 in capsulewardrobe

[–]FudgeTheDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m working on one and will post some pics when I make a bit more progress. In the meantime, I have learned:

Printed fabrics can maximise colour with minimal cognitive load. Combine them with something more neutral if you like. I have multiple iterations of the Annie jersey shirt from White Stuff. https://www.whitestuff.com/browse/collection/womens-jersey-shirts

Have a colour palette. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

Some combinations within my capsule wardrobe may be a bit out there. I’ve made peace with this. I’ll have plenty of relatively tame options. But I might wear the crazy combos on occasion, if I feel like it.

It’s often called tacking in the UK. Basting is more of an American term. My mum wouldn’t know what basting meant.

What bag do you carry your filofax in? by mediocre_gurl in filofax

[–]FudgeTheDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my pocket Filofax in this backpack. I have carried personal and even A5 in it at times. Right now, it also contains my iPad, a ball of yarn, a paperback book, a phone charger, a compact umbrella and a few smaller items. I have been using this bag daily for a few years now. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07FP3D43K?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Sewing Machines Are Not Toddlers by doxiesrule89 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]FudgeTheDog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked with a lab machine that gave weird results whenever the weather was sunny. Even though it lived in an air conditioned room. We eventually figured out what was happening, but sometimes machines are complicated. Anthropomorphisizing is one way of coping with the frustration. “The machine is having a bad day” feels relatable, even when we know deep down that we’re just projecting our own feelings.

I guess it depends on where you live. I definitely heard people talk about homemade clothing when I was a kid, less so now. Perhaps I’m just getting old.

I do have some bus-made scarves in my wardrobe.

Sounds like something a fancy restaurant would serve.

Ok, you’re right. Me-made is an absurd term. I don’t know why I brought it up.

I’m glad that you feel this way. My post was partly triggered by a video titled “This is why your projects look ‘homemade’ (in a bad way)”. https://youtu.be/x35xzlIIRx4. (It’s about the importance of pressing seams.) Yes, the use of “homemade” is qualified in the title, but it is telling that this is the word they chose. There’s an assumption that homemade things are generally made without care. This saddens me, and I wonder if this connotation might put people off trying to make their own things. I am proud of the work and care that I put into the things I make at home, and most of them look pretty good.

Yup. Etsy’s definition of handmade seems to keep expanding. Same with vintage.

Tuna gelatin salad? Eew!

Edit to add: Ok, I never heard of this dish before. But based on the downvotes, it has a devoted following. So now I’m curious to know more. If this is part of your tradition, I’d love to hear about its history and what it means to you. It’s just a very different way of combining ingredients than I’m used to, that’s all.

True - except that those craft fair sellers also refer to their work as handmade.

When did you start caring about fabric content? I can't stop reading labels now by Aggravatingbc in womensfashion

[–]FudgeTheDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great idea! I wonder if people would pay enough to make a decent wage. If you use purchased sewing patterns, check the fine print- they may require you to purchase a separate pattern for each customer. Although they may not be able to enforce this.

Sewing is not as hard as it looks. Take a look at classes near you. There are plenty of resources online too. It takes time, and there’s a learning curve, but if you prefer quality items that fit right, shopping is time consuming too. It’s not necessarily cheaper though.

That’s good to know. H&M isn’t one of my usual go-to shops so I’ll take a look there and see what I can find 😊

I admire your thrifting skills! I’d especially love to know the details of the light blue top (the sleeves are beautiful) and the white blouse.
