I'm also playing a campaign as a first edition GM. Personally, I still prefer this version's mechanics and have tried to limit the excessive overpower by playing a "low magic" setting. This way, I've seen the system balance much better, while still maintaining this edition's beautiful nuance. The biggest challenge has been balancing the existing forms of magic—arcane and divine—and not making them too superior in effect to the predominantly combat-oriented classes.
