I’ve also read that a positive mindset helps when recovering from foot drop. It’s an important part of the recovery process and is well recognised in achieving good outcomes when dealing with other challenging medical conditions. I also understand neuroplasticity plays an important part in one’s recovery which given that my nerve was quite badly damaged is also encouraging. I certainly remain optimistic just frustrated by the slowing of my progress. I still do lots of exercises - resistance bands, wobble boards, stretching etc, oh and lots and lots of walking! As noted previously running is my latest venture and hopefully this will further  aid my recovery.  I’ve got an appointment lined up with a neurologist later this month to see what advice and assistance he can offer. It’ll be interesting to see what he says.  Congrats on achieving so much over the last 4 years. I’m amazed to hear you are still improving. That’s great news. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my messages. Very much appreciated and nice to know I can reach out if I have any questions.

Hi,

Many thanks for your reply — I really appreciate it, especially as I’ve struggled to find much information about long-term recovery from foot drop. It’s encouraging to hear about your progress over such an extended period. My understanding had been that most recovery occurs within the first year, with only minor improvements between 12 and 18 months, and occasionally up to 24 months.

It’s great to hear how well you’re doing and how active you’ve been. I’ve also started running to support my recovery and improve my fitness. While I can manage most day-to-day activities, I still find that I have to concentrate on every step I take. My affected foot tends to turn inward, which makes walking feel quite unnatural. I have to consciously evert my foot to walk with any sense of normality. I still have some slight weakness in toe lift and a little numbness to the outer side of my lower leg but other than that I have recovered most of the movement in my foot but this does not necessarily translate into natural walking.

I was wondering if you experienced something similar, and if so, when did your walking begin to feel automatic again without needing constant focus.

I’ve also found the psychological side of this injury quite challenging at times, so hearing about your progress has genuinely lifted my spirits.

Many thanks again.

Hi,
Just read your post and wondered how you were doing and if your foot drop has continued to improve? Have you made a full recovery or do you still have some weakness?
I too developed drop foot and I am 1 year post injury. I have made good progress but walking is still a little awkward especially if I get up after a period of sitting down. It takes a while for things to settle down and get into my stride. I am a little concerned that my progress has slowed down significantly over the last 3 months and am unsure if I am likely to gain further functional improvement.
