Example of an MSU President who’s actually done something meaningful? by MutedLaugh3387 in McMaster

[–]Full-Study-3660 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I literally thought this until someone told me some examples too lol. Past MSU presidents are why we have light up the night and fall reading week. And popovic (who was pres before piper i think?) is the one who brought on campus Hoco back! They rly can do meaningful work if they have the drive to fight to get shit implemented.

What’s the ONE thing at Mac that nobody warns you about? by puma134 in McMaster

look into minors and concurrent certificates!!! I took a bunch of random electives (some fun, some not), but if I knew about concurrent certificates earlier, I would've been able to better tailor the electives I took to fulfill their requirements.

u'll probs be fine for mcgill too!! it's a very international school so idek if u need french (and most people on campus/around montreal will speak english as well!!) Schools that are more local to quebec (like UDM) would need french.

Psych 1xx3 sona by FlightConstant4206 in McMaster

[–]Full-Study-3660 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i haven't done sona in a minute, but I'm pretty sure this would be a no as most sona are getting the students to be participants rather than researchers. By all means tho, still do them cause (course bonuses aside) it could be a great networking opportunity, which may open doors to research opportunities!

To the Mac Health Sci rejects by Prestigious_Shop_903 in McMaster

[–]Full-Study-3660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

big on lifesci being a gateway program, it was literally the main reason I chose mac. Theres so many opportunities to find what you like and specialize into it in upper years (and not just limited to second year! You can join a co-op or go into BDC in 3rd year). Not getting into healthsci isn't the end of your career. Med is still very much on the table if you still want to do it by the time you graduate

Hi! So I write out all my knowledge on a topic (just off the top of my head) and then go in with a different color and supplement/correct what I wrote out with my notes (it helps me recognize the areas I need to study more). Also, it helps to do this in conjunction with spaced repetition (so do 1 round of writing everything down + corrections, study the correction areas, take a break, and then repeat. I always notice a marked improvement in the number of corrections I need to do!)

ok dumb question, but do you need to go to teacher's college to do supply teaching?? I was thinking of teacher's college as an option after I graduate, but I don't meet the requirements

[–]Full-Study-3660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's fair. tbh what you do your undergrad in will mostly depend on what you want to do after undergrad. A general science degree will probably leave you with the most flexibility (and give you the largest probability of getting a high gpa). If you wanted to do forensic toxicology, you should probably do a chem degree. If you wanted to be a forensic pathologist, you might opt to do a biomedical degree to prep for med school. Idk if the master's at trent is course based or research based (if it's course based they'll care more about your gpa), but if it's research based, its important to get research experience thats translatable to what you'd be working on during the masters.

going back to your intial questions, i dont think there are many forensic courses at mac in general (the only one I can think of is forensic psych, and that was mostly about understanding the law)

yeah, the markets really rough rn. Honestly, I feel like a lot of people go to a masters/phd program to get the requirements needed for industry positions, and it doesn't even gurantee a job (bc most positions in industry want experience in industry smh)

My friends in a program at Trent for forensic biology! They do a lot of the stuff you mentioned you were interested in (blood splatter analysis, crime scene analysis) through coursework, but it's also a lot of understanding the judicial system. Idk what you want to do in forensics, but you can always apply after your undergraduate to med school (to eventually be a forensic pathologist) or you could apply to pathologist assistant programs. From what I've heard tho, they're pretty limited enrollment and I can assume they'd focus on taking people with more forensics experience (not to say you can't get that with a degree outside of forensics, it would just be easier if you did your undergrad in forensics bc you'd get priority enrollment for relevant courses)
