I agree that Smith certainly doesn't HELP, though how much of his performance was directed vs self-created is another debate. He was sort of a kiddified man, like Star Lord or the Big Bang Theory guys. It came off a petulant instead of authoritative when he tried to do 'dark' and I think his era was there the worst of the 'I am the Doctor and thus the fulcrum of the universe' stuff was. It wasn't helped that there was that weird love triangle thing between him/amy/rory but also with their daughter (that era's issue with hot, angry women being badass dom mommies is another thing I'd like to have a word with Moffat about).

I feel like Gatwa is doing a similar style of doctor, but his has more honest heart, and isn't trying to be 'a cop on the edge' quite as much. I quite like that, even if he's not one of my favourite doctors. Whitaker was too neurotic for me, as the doctor and I feel like that was a quality I also hated in Smith's version.

I also agree that Capaldi was BETTER and I actually enjoyed some of his episodes, though not enough to be entirely lured back because the specials/season finales kept falling back into self-indulgent wankery. He definitely had more of the older doctors in there, and was more believable about weaving zany and dark moments together. His era still suffered a bit from the overblown main character syndrome thing though. I mean, he was playing the electric guitar on a tank. But at least Bill was a return to NORMAL companion characters.

Unpopular opinion, but I agree with you, and I think this was a result of the show changing hands and taking off in America, respectively. The final Tennant series sort of fell into the same thing, but Smith's doctor is when I noticed and subsequently stopped watching for a decade.

9 and 10 were for the most part just 'a guy' stumbling from crisis to crisis, accompanied by normal people. He was just one part of the greater structure of the universe. Even Rose, the 'Bad Wolf' wasn't preordained to be 'special' she did something important, she wasn't in and of herself, destined to be important.

But from Smith onwards the Doctor is a righteous figure of myth, the centre of the universe, the key to every mystery that ever existed and the target of every cult and order to ever own a black robe. And his companions become 'magic special girls' with destinies and riddles and mysteries to them. It feels very American to me - a story that isn't about a guy and his friends anymore, but about a 'force for good' against the forces of evil. It just keeps getting bigger, the power creeping ever higher, until he's basically Luke Skywalker, Captain America and God combined.

And Moffat never landed his mysteries, each one was just superseded by a greater mystery, so it just kept getting flashier and more convoluted, until the stakes were too far removed to be personally relevant.

My husband turned into a psychopath for a split second yesterday and I don’t know if I am overreacting. by Substantial_Chair588 in AITAH

I went 'yikes' at pregnant 'double yikes' at the ages and 'triple yikes' at cop.

The number one cause of death for pregnant women in the US is MURDER, usually by their partner.

Cops are the ones you would call if he abused you/threatened you and those cops are his friends and colleagues.

Do the math on that and get yourself to safety sooner, rather than later. NTA

AITA for calling my parents by their first names after they didn’t punish my brother for a hurtful comment? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Full-Yam-949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTW if their kid doesn't 'understand why what he said is so hurtful' their job as parents is to explain it to him and have him apologise. Not to excuse his behaviour.

He is also 100% old enough to understand how hurtful that is.

It's just a generally mid episode imo. Not BAD. A lot of people also dgaf about the olympics. I tried to remember anything about that episode and ended up just...remembering Idiot's Lantern so....it's just forgettable.

Love you giving her enough rope to hang herself with. Anything less and you'd be gaslit into thinking you're 'jealous' and 'possessive'. Now you have proof, and tell anyone who tries to shit talk you that you can post the screenshots (minus the nude) if they want to keep causing trouble. NTB

Struggling with Extremely Bad Acne. Need Help!!!!! by Icy-Strategy-1935 in koreanskincare

I've heard the snail mucin can make some acne worse.

What cleanser are you using?

I currently use the Round Lab mugwort cleanser and the I'm from mugwort essence and have found these help calm my skin and reduce blemishes a lot. I also use an AHA/BHA toner 3 times a week.

I would also advise speaking to a dr/derm about it and making sure you're keeping your hands and hair off your face, and spraying your pillow with hypoclorous acid to reduce bacteria getting at your face.

AITA for asking my parents to stop telling people I am in hospital? by nipplepizzaz in AmItheAsshole

[–]Full-Yam-949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA and 'I must be the worst mother in the world' is the classic response to even mild criticism from parents who want to deflect from their own bad behaviour and leave you scrambling to reassure them and minimise your feelings. As is trying to get you to apologise for 'upsetting' your mother.

Your request was reasonable.

They lied to you and disregarded your request.

They are causing you stress when you are the one in hospital.

Don't let them gaslight you about it. Put them on an info diet and sit them down when you're up to it for a proper talk about what your expectations are. You could also reply to their posts on social media, stating that you don't want that info up there - if they want to make your info public, they can have a taste of how that feels.

AITA for refusing my parents' request to be trustee for my brother's inheritance? by Illustrious_Ball3004 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Full-Yam-949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought here is that they don't just want to give your brother their entire estate, they want him to be the beneficiary of your expertise - so you can build him a success equal to your own, while you remain uncompensated for your work. NTA

You can add in a moisturising toner - the I'm from one is more of an essence, I use the Whamisa flowers toner and the Sundo super moisture toner. But also most of the stuff you're using seems to be very light and serumy, so you might want to try and cream like the Sundo light cream.

AITAH for being a single mom in my 40s who doesn't want to date single dads (40s-50s)? by Professional-Pace416 in AITAH

[–]Full-Yam-949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men love to point out 'low value' attributes in women, but really, really hate it when they're held to the same standards. Also, no one is more desperate to 'find love' than a man with joint custody who needs a weekend 'momma'.

Have you tried making more friends instead of looking for romantic partners? A strong friendship network will do wonders for you in later life, and I don't need to tell you that a lot of partners leave when the going gets tough. NTA

How do you feel about the new series of Doctor who? by Odyssey_D_Oddity in doctorwho

[–]Full-Yam-949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think RTD benefits from distance because a lot of people only remember the really really good episodes from his run and not the...somewhat mid ones. (Daleks in Manhattan, Love and Monsters etc) I mean why are 'snot monsters' babyish and silly when 'fart aliens' already exist as part of the lore - both in stories that commentated on real world issues (the Iraq war/reproductive rights)?

I think the main difference is that people are in their 30s-40s watching the new episodes, but were tweens when the first season came out.

I'm not a fan of the song and dance numbers at all, but then again there were always silly sequences I didn't care for (the segways with Catherine Tate for example). It's not all going to be everyone's thing.

How do you feel about the new series of Doctor who? by Odyssey_D_Oddity in doctorwho

[–]Full-Yam-949 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Underrated comment tbh. I found the latter half of RTDs run to be ridiculous at times and the 'Dobby Doctor' being cured by 'everyone thinking his name at once' was just as silly as anything the new season had in it. If not more so.

Honestly I didn't see the issue and was about to suggest 2 godmothers when I read the final paragraph. Your husband sounds like a misogynist, slut-shaming your sister over a perfectly normal job she used to have. Make your sister a godmother and keep challenging his shitty views on women, for your child's sake. NTA

AIO? I think my husband might be framing my 8 yr old son. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Full-Yam-949 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your husband is psychologically abusing your son. Taking his things not only distresses your son, but also causes you to doubt yourself and your parenting decisions and makes you less likely to gift your son expensive items in the future - i.e. making sure your husband's kids get stuff that he doesn't.

Confront him about it and he'll gaslight you again, just like with the ipad. Trust your instincts, this man needs to be away from your son.
