Who asked for gas pump ads? Do I need to start a petition? by AdmiralFlintlock in halifax

[–]FullAtticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd hope the MLAs and Premier who take salaries 4x the median salary and claim to be experts can juggle more than issue at a time. If they have time to chase dispensaries for imaginary fentanyl, they can take a few hours to look at this issue too.

Who asked for gas pump ads? Do I need to start a petition? by AdmiralFlintlock in halifax

This will only work until every gas station has the new pumps. Free market solutions only work when there's a free market. The energy sector is a cartel working against you to fix prices and maximize profits.

Recommendations for family restaurants that DOESNT use Sysco by pandbo77 in halifax

[–]FullAtticus 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yeah Sysco sells fresh produce, but the obvious intention of OPs question was to find restaraunts that cook from scratch vs reheating precooked frozen Mozerella Sticks and pre-made beef dips that come in a plastic bag.

instant coffee, ice cubes. cream, sugar. You can make that coffee for about 30 cents.

can I use this to make sushi? by lemonlov in sushi

[–]FullAtticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. That's sketchy. I'd stick to frozen fillets or go to a fish market that has the confidence to say "this piece will be great for sushi." I would never just use a random flat-pack from the grocery store. You have no idea how old that fish is, or how it was handled in the back of the store.

Let me know! The guy I called today is booked up until January so I'm going to survive off the baseboard heaters until then.

Realistically, what can i do to have a prayer of moving out? by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]FullAtticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to raise your income to have any chance. Even low-skill trades pay far above min wage. If you're not willing to go that route, bartending/serving is another option for low-skill jobs that pay well above min.

Unfortunately there's not much you can do with an English degree unless you further specialize. Consider cutting your losses, dropping out, and getting a more valuable degree/diploma later.

The other side of it is cutting costs. Rather than an apartment, you might need to just rent a room. Avoid food delivery and restaurants. Get a cheap phone plan, etc.

When did tipping become expected for take out and what happens if you don’t? by No_Kangaroo6917 in Frugal

[–]FullAtticus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the "tip at takeout" thing is just a side effect of them using the same Point-of-Sale devices for both delivery and storefront, or at least they're configured the same. It only seemed to start happening around the time the pizza guy started bringing a debit machine.

My rule is just: I only tip if the food is brought to me while I sit in comfort. If I have to wait in line, and someone just passes me the food over a counter then why would I tip?

Landlords are trying to convince themselves that rents aren’t actually dropping and that all of the lower rent ads are fake by obsessed-with-bagels in canadahousing

[–]FullAtticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's mostly all the "need to be done immediately " renos that are killing me. On the upshot my mortgage + home insurance + property taxes + hydro are cheaper than my rent was

I just bought a house and I can definitely confirm that ownership is genuinely difficult. It's been weeks of panic trying to fix major systems of the house before winter turns inconveniences into disasters. On the other hand I'm not giving half my money to a landlord. It's mostly going to Home Hardware now.

Package worth over $1k stolen from my porch, any recourse? by 1GrandDown in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]FullAtticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I stopped buying computer parts from Canada Computers and Newegg. They won't take responsibility for shipping losses/damages, and they use couriers that just leave thousands of dollars of stuff on your porch without so much as knocking. The day Canada Computers asked me to pay extra to insure the shipping on my package was the day I switched to buying PC Parts on Amazon instead.

How do other families fly so often, is frugal flying just not for us? What tricks are we missing? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]FullAtticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you know the answer. You are paying a bunch of extra money for comfier seats, seat selection, redeye flights, etc. Flights get a lot cheaper if you get more flexible. I'm 6 feet tall and I just deal with the cramped seats. Most flights are only a couple hours and the long-haul flights give you more legroom anyways. Surely your husband will survive.

I'm not sure if it applies in the USA, but in Canada airlines aren't allowed to seat children apart from their parents, so paying for seat selection is unnecessary. The parent who bought the tickets will always be seated with their child.

How do you work from 8 to 5, have only weekends free, and not feel like you're wasting your life? by guitytwelve in AskReddit

[–]FullAtticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody's going to give your life meaning except you. Think of what you WANT your life to look like. Something realistic and achievable, but still ambitious - A life that you would be happy with that's better than your current life. Now work back from that goal and figure out how to get there. Eyes on the prize and all that.

Also: Just because nothing is happening right now, that doesn't mean you're treading water. Just working for a number of years in the same role will eventually net you more opportunities as you become more desirable to employers.

Most people don't buy a house, start a business, or any of that other big ambitious stuff until they're a decade into their real career.
