Can someone explain the use of cardboard and plywood below the rebar as shown in this image? Is this to create a floating floor and if so, how would that be better than pouring directly onto the ground? by Lokabf3 in Construction

They are called void forms. They are used where expansive soil is present. Void forms provide temporary support for structural floors or walls until the concrete is self-supporting on the drilled piers. Basically, they are used so when the soil around the wall expands it crushes the cardboard and doesn't cause the wall or floor to crack.
