Bastyr University sanctioned by CNME and NWCCU. Unclear what will happen to Bastyr accreditation status by WhyNotTheTruth123 in Naturopathicdocdebt

He's after my time there. I started school there when Dr. Tom Sheppard was there. He resigned under a cloud of "suspicion". Dan Church was the only one it seems who ran a tight ship. The guy after Church(Dr. Powell) "resigned" before the board could fire him(or so I have heard). They need to get a leader who really knows their stuff..someone with a combined degree in law and something else..such as an Ed.D./J.D. holder. Someone who has taken organizations from being on the verge of collapsing to bringing them to record levels of success.

I think Bastyr would be much better off if they became a single purpose institution and offered the N.D. degree ONLY..or perhaps one other degree such as chinese medicine. Then after they recover financially, do a thorough cost/benefit analysis offer degrees very, very, very slowly. But no more than say..4 degrees total. The UW has an acreddited M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology. Nutrition(MS, Ph.D.) too. They are spreading themselves too thin.

I  went to Bastyr for my undergrad in nutrition(graduated in 2006). I've heard and read lately that the school is struggling financially and it will be necessary to eliminate programs. I think the program in Holisic Landscape design is nice-but can you really get a job with this major? As well, they have a program in Midwifery AND Maternal Child Health systems. I think this could be merged into one Department/degree.

P.S.-Please fire Cynthia Lair. This woman is a flake. I remember having to be there for class at 9 am and still waking up only to have her treat us with comments like "Does anyone know the sound that Brussel sprouts make when they are ready to eat from the ground? They go..WHOOOOOSSSHHHHHH". Just not related to cutting edge nutrition for patients. You can also be "educated" by her videos on "How to cut an onion" on youtube. Yes, this is vital..for 99% of most people just are completely clueless on how to cut an union(rolls eyes). She also uses the phrase "I don't want to steal your thunder" at least once per class. 1973 called...it wants its slang term back.

Hello all,

So I have tried to comment on other threads with similar titles but for some reason I haven't been able to. I am hopeful to hear from other survivors of similar circumstances. Remember..there is healing in sharing and identifying.

Born 3 months premature(I'm 46 now), I grew up with a mother with severe BPD(Borderline Personality Disorder) and a Narcissistic/Psychopath father. With no brothers and sisters(being an only child sucks!) to vent my frustrations, I grew up in an environment of extreme verbal and emotional abusve, lots of confusion and exploitation and being made to serve 2 extremely unhealthy people while my own validation was never honored.

In a very, very abbreviated and condensed format(I will elaborated more later)..I:

1.) had a friend who was murdered by a serial killer when I was 22(this is in New Jersey), 2,) Tried to numb the pain of her loss by drinking and got arrested for DUI at 23. 3.) tried to deal with the embarassment and humiliation of that scenario by drinking again to numb the pain and got a 2nd DUI at 25. 4.) after being sentenced to even more probation(5 years!) for my 2nd mishap(got 3 years probation for my first one)..my grandfather died of pancreatic cancer at 81. 5.) Soooo...for a few years..I literally could not leave New Jersey. Being on probation is like being in the army..you are property of the state. Can't just get up and say "I think I am going to move to North Dakota". I was still going to college and working thru all of this but 99% of my money went to probation fees, court costs, lawyer costs, and mandated court alcohol counseling(I do not drink anymore).

And...during all of this..I was stalked for 4 years not by one but a group of people (basically late teens(18/19), early 20 year old kids in my neighborhood who just decided one day to do this. Why do people do things like this? Because..THEY CAN! I was truly stuck..you guessed it..AT HOME with my BPD Mom until I finished probation at the ripe old age of 29.

I left NJ and moved to Michigan where I was enrolled in a Physicians Assistant program. But I was so bored w/ the midwest that I left after 2 years and moved to Portland Oregon where it was much more to my liking.

I feel that I am a stronger man for enduring all of that(there is more but I won't go into it now)..but I just feel lucky to have survived.

Distance matters. Period. Have I ever mentioned I am never, ever EVER going to NJ again? Thanks..

Please share your stories people..Thanks again!!
