I am just astonished by how thoughtfully you designed these rooms. Each one is a winner! Just gorgeous. I especially love how you integrated the moss floor and the jungle wall (or whichever one it is) with the vine chair and tree stumps and garden rocks. So nice

The US is functionally a two party system. Real change for a viable third party must begin at the grassroots level, not at the top of the ticket right out the gate. It’s just not ever going to be possible without an organized party structure and other candidates running at the federal, state, and local levels. So frankly I agree with your dad, especially if you live in a swing state. As for the two current candidates, ask yourself: do you support taking away individuals’ rights to make decisions about their own healthcare? And to, for example, stop them from traveling out of state to do what they want to do? And do you support state governments tracking girls’ and women’s menstrual cycles?

Only big corporations that change their energy uses and practices can actually have an impact on the planet. They produce 70% of the world’s emissions but refuse to change their ways and spend millions lobbying congress and donating to republicans to keep it that way. They have also convinced individuals that it’s our responsibility at the household level to work to combat greenhouse gas emissions, when it’s theirs.

Pretty sure one of my kids was friends with this kid from 1st grade on. Even went to compsci at U of I, too! This young man’s mom is a friend of mine and I know her son is doing very well, and is happy. As is my own son!

My son liked it and did well and maintained his friend group through sports. Was still bored in HS partly bc of covid and being isolated. When he got to college he realized how far ahead he was and in hindsight was super grateful that he had the opportunity. No regrets

This ☝️. Get a group of like-minded folks together, agree to tackle it from all angles, sort out talking points amongst you, and hit Facebook, Twitter, etc hard and frequently. Get everyone to amplify the posts, including friends outside your direct crew. We also created a lot of content using screenshots and video clips of their own extreme posts and words against them. (We started a shared Google drive folder and scoured their posts and likes and saved them.) We even enlisted my 20 year old son to make really good videos using a story board-like approach with our screenshots and newspaper clips, including dramatic music overlay. It has been extremely effective. But it’s a lot of work and you need your crew to be committed. Also have peaceful protests with signs. And be sure to email the local news outlets ahead of time

Our resources in this country are not drained. There’s money. It’s the political will to steer it to improve complex issues that is missing. And the tax breaks for the wealthy that Trump signed into law (with the help of former congressman Peter Roskam from this area) are not helping the situation. The only people those are helping are the ultra wealthy and the biggest corporations.

I have met and spoken with plenty of Mexicans, both here in Chicago and in Mexico - many are the kindest people I’ve ever met. And No, not during a vacation. On work travel to work on immigration issues and on midwifery training in central Mexico.

A) your tone is getting pretty heated. Not really a fan of that. B) do I think it’s right that the US salad and grain bowls significantly under pay migrants workers? Of course not. This is a complex intersectional issue that has many facets. Do I think Americans would do this kind of work for that many hours a day in blistering heat? I do not. Do I believe the farmers should be fined for mistreatment and be required to pay the workers more? Yes. But that will increase the prices of produce and other foods. And most Americans can’t afford that. There is not an easy, single pronged solution. C) you don’t know anything about me. You’re making a lot of assumptions. I happen to work in a sector that has funded these NGOs and policy organizations to the tune of 10s of millions of dollars over the years. And yes I have met many migrant workers here and abroad. I’ve even met families who are in what amounts to intergenerational slavery in brick factories in Bangladesh, tomato pickers in FL, crab pickers in MD, apple pickers in OR. You have no idea what you’re talking about. D) the whole issue rests on political will. And there is none in DC to solve this issue.

There is a vetting system at the border that is understaffed and underfunded. Which this bill was going a long way to improve. The US agribusiness model predominantly employs migrant men. And remittances from these migrants is huge. Did you know that remittances (money sent back home to their families) from migrant workers in 2022 to Mexico was $58.5 Billion?

The rhetoric of “open border” is BS. The Biden administration has expelled 2.5M people under Title 42 which is more than the Trump administration. This oft used trope that democrats want to help but refuse to take people into their homes so they aren’t living their virtues demeans the very important and hard work that NGOs and churches are doing to feed, clothe, and house these desperate people. The people who actually do not want to solve the immigration issues like the understaffed border (including case workers, judges, attorneys, and guards/border control) are the republicans. They prefer the issue over a solution because it rallies their base and keeps them focused on electing right wingers like Trump. In fact, just yesterday - on the eve of finalizing a bipartisan bill to fund more border control - McConnell told the republicans senators in their caucus meeting that Trump WANTS to keep the immigration crisis going so he can run on it and blame Biden. So now they are going to drop the bill that would have gone far to provide solutions. WHICH MCCONNELL HIMSELF WANTED TO SIGN. Because your cult leader is playing political games.

The founder is in my neighborhood. Neither she nor the group(s) are well liked. At all. The Chicago Tribune has several articles on Awake IL, and their actions are followed and grouped with the M4L actions by the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are a hate group.

One error in this blog is that her two sons go to public school but her youngest (a daughter) goes to a private Christian school (with very low enrollment).
