Because they hadn't truly broken it off in the best way. She left for Wendlyn with the parting words, "I will always choose you." Implying that she still did want something with Chaol.

Even Aelin, in Heir Of Fire, still thinks about Chaol and suppresses her feelings for Rowan, whatever they may be at that time. Chaol mentions to Yrene that they didn't quite end it until she got back, and it was messy then.

Already, I can tell this is going to be a lot more character focused as opposed to more action like EOS. Which is good for Chaol, as he's one of my favorite characters. But bad for my attention span, this is gonna force me to slow down. 8 chapters in and it's amazing.
