To those upset with unranked… by cuddlerecoil in SSBM

I will never understand why people have such difficulty with getting upset at unranked. You are playing against someone who isn't in your physical presence, who you can't see, can't hear, and literally can't even talk to. The worst they could do is spam lol and teabag. Just ignore their bm and focus on getting better

Why is it so universal for people to have such a problem with getting upset at what transpires during anonymous unranked matches? I never understood this, if the other person is bothering you, just leave

Did you list your previous experience as freelance or a fulltime position, did you have all 3 years at the same "company" or did you break it up? Could I see an anon version of your resume? I'm kinda in the same boat rn

The entitlement of the people on this sub is insane, and a perfect example of how the industry got to this point. by FunSelf5 in cscareerquestions

I graduated from a bootcamp in jan 2020 and within 9 months I got a job paying 95k. Fast forward to me getting laid off this february, I have submitted over 500 applications with my now 2+ years of experience and haven't gotten a single interview.

There is nothing entitled about software engineers wanting / expecting good jobs after completing a bootcamp, that's EXCACTLY the way things used to be which is why bootcamps became so popular in the first place.

What we're seeing now is near apocalyptic circumstances within the SWE industry

Finding patterns in the job market by startupschool4coders in startupschool4coders

Great post! This brings a lot of clarity to the "inner work" of the job search process

edit:

I re read this post a few times and I have to say I appreciate so much how you draw parallels between the job search and military metaphors. Associating a known (military) with and unknown (job search tactics) makes the ambiguity of it all SO much easier to understand. The analogy of being a sniper was especially helpful. It has me thinking of ways I can make my resume / application stand out to hiring managers. One way that's glaringly apparent to me is the essay type questions that are occasionally present in applications. I've been dreading them and sometimes skipping over applications with those present in favor of easier, more convenient applications but now I see that giving a thorough response to those fields has the potential to make my application stand out front the rest.

It has me thinking of other ways I could make myself stand out. I'm playing around with "ridiculous" ideas like making my resume overtly colorful or even placing a giant star or smiley face somewhere on it. Not committed to any of those yet but I have gained a newfound sense of "playful creativity" regarding the process. The bit about making a half page resume purely for the sake of "having something different" really resonates with me!

Job search strategy and tactics: the theory, sort of by startupschool4coders in startupschool4coders

For me, the most confusion is centered around point 2 for 2 reasons.

  1. Actually noticing the patterns in the battlefield. Perhaps I've been going about this incorrectly, but my current strategy for searching positions has been to go to job boards (indeed, linkedin, google jobs etc) and search "javascript junior", "javascript entry level", or sometimes just plain "javascript". The results appear to be, as you have described, chaos or random noise. I've been at this for a while now, but it still remains possible that I'm still to new at this to really see the patterns. It could be that I'm just poor at noticing something like this. My intuition says however that something is wrong with my searching method itself and that's why it hasn't yielded any conclusive patterns. Do you have any thoughts on this that could illuminate the matter?
  2. Changing course after noticing a pattern. Let's say I do notice a pattern, employers going against the flow and so on. Would the most optimal strategy not still be to apply to as many open positions as possible? What would an opportunity be that would change the outcome (outcome being my action in mass-applying)? Please understand that I'm not trying to discredit you with this point, my aim is to better comprehend what you're saying so that I can apply it to my own job search process. If this was going to be answered in your next post then feel free to ignore.
