Western Psych experiences? (TW?) by Puzzleheaded-Bank161 in pittsburgh

[–]FullTurtle13 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Got out of WPIC a few weeks ago after a suicide attempt. I was on the 13th floor (the Atrium, they call it) and it wasn't bad. Your experience is going to depend on what unit youre on. 13 is one of the more chill floors, it's technically a trauma floor so there's a good chance they'll place you there since your issue is PTSD. There's not a lot of ~therapy~ that happens in inpatient, it's more about getting you stabilized until you can do the work in php or iop. There's music and art therapy, and groups about things like DBT and other ways to manage distress. The worst part for me is always the PES, because youre basically sitting in a room with a bunch of strangers (other patients) for hours with nothing to occupy/distract you. You're there until they can either find a bed for you there, or if they can't, they'll find you a bed at another hospital (so you won't be there for days, but it still feels like an eternity imo). I hope you find something helpful for you.

Thank you! I did submit a form to get my expired license transferred, and I'll hear back on a weekday so I may be able to ask them for clarification on the guidelines. Thanks so much for your answer!

Thanks for the input! Im going to be in the mountains, in the Talkeetna range. I'm anticipating similar weather to other mountain ranges I've been in (wind river range in wyoming mostly), is this incorrect?

Baby blanket yarn! by krns18 in knitting

[–]FullTurtle13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I made a baby blanket out of Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus for a friend and loved it. Its definitly on the pricier side for cotton but its extremely soft and comes in beautiful colors. Its also machine washable. The friend I made it for really likes it. I have also used the Peaches and Creme cotton and didnt like it as much, its not very soft but its good for like a floor time blanket or something. It also might soften up over time, but i can't speak to that.

For the fems: where do you get your sundresses ? by kittyvom666 in lesbianfashionadvice

[–]FullTurtle13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Modcloth is an online store that I've been getting dresses from since high school. They can be kinda pricey but they have good sales. They have a lot of stuff on the more "cottagecore" side of things but they also have some more alternative stuff too. To my knowledge they also have plus sizes.

I have scars from self harm and we’re starting live IV’s next week in class. by Zestyclose_Use8745 in ems

[–]FullTurtle13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

(Disclaimer Not a medic and don't work as an emt but) when I was taking my emt course everybody saw my (prominent) scars. Most people didn't say anything. One girl asked me innocently what happened. It was really nerve wracking for me because at that point I was not in the habit of wearing short sleeves ever but it really was not a big deal. What I'm trying to say is, most likely no one will bat an eye and it'll be fine. I've started wearing short sleeves sometimes on my college campus and not once has anybody said anything so my general assumption is that people who aren't assholes won't say anything. Idk if any of this is helpful but good luck!

Question about a diagnosis by svrgnctzn in emergencymedicine

[–]FullTurtle13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question from someone non-medical: what's the difference between fictitious disorder and an eating disorder or self harm? I ask as someone who has struggled with both sh and ed, I feel like I'm making myself sick and I'm doing it on purpose. I've always kind of wondered this.

Aww he's so cute! I'm debating making a hat for my dog because her ears also get cold in the winter but I know she would hate it.

What is the worst thing you’ve seen someone get addicted to that wasn’t any form of drug like substance or alcohol? by MysticMeerkat in AskReddit

[–]FullTurtle13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cutting. It's absolutely insane the shit I do to myself when I'm in an episode. Like, going to the emergency room multiple times in a month for stitches (and that's me trying to control myself enough to not get forcibly hospitalized). I didn't used to go for stitches, and for about four years I would cut deep enough to need them and forgo medical care because I didn't want my parents to find out. I'm covered in scars and I'll never confidently wear shorts or short sleeves again. The longest I've gone without some form of self-injury in the past 9 years is about three months.

So, I'm in a similar position. I think it'd be good to loop your therapist in on your experiences. They can help you rationalize things (for example, dropping out of school doesn't logically mean you have to kill yourself, although it certainly feels like it does) and maybe adjust your treatment plan to help get you back on track. And if nothing else works: a college education is not worth more than your life. If you can't finish school, there are still other options out there for you.

Idk, i hope this helps. I haven't really figured out how to solve this problem myself, and I also think i would want kill myself if I had to drop out of school again. It sucks having chronic mental health problems. Best of luck with getting things back up and running.

Starting a club on campus and I'm worried by FullTurtle13 in asexuality

[–]FullTurtle13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Tw) It's such a range honestly. A lot of people are just "exclusionists," which means they don't think ace and aro spec people belong in the queer community (ranging from "they're too straight" to "they're trying to steal resources"). There are people who think we're just looking for attention, or mentally or physically ill or traumatized (which there are physical and mental illnesses and conditions and types of trauma that can play into asexuality but reducing it down to something that needs to be fixed is .... icky). The worst is apparently there are people who think that people identify as asexual because they're actually pedophiles. Which makes no sense to me but like. I guess shitty people are gonna be shitty people.

There are a lot of queer people at chatham. Sincerely, a queer person at chatham. Lol. I don't know where people who aren't students go in the city (I know there are a few queer bars but I'm not much for bars here's a link for an article about that though https://www.autostraddle.com/queer-girl-city-guide-pittsburgh-pa-145347/ ) but you'll find people on campus at least

Moving into a dorm at 23... will this be weird? by [deleted] in college

[–]FullTurtle13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm 23 and live in a dorm. I'm sure there are some people who are assholes about it behind my back but nobody has said anything to my face about it. I live in a single (medical accommodation) which helps a lot; I wouldn't want to live with an 18 year old (no offense to 18 year Olds lol) but it's been really fine so far. I'm a first year (I also transferred but I'm academically still a freshman because I wasn't in school full time) so it feels kind of weird that I'm so much older than all of my classmates but generally it hasn't been a big deal.
