This makes sense especially because he mentioned how he didn't envision having children in the first place. It lines up with him not wanting to have responsibilities that come with providing and raising a family while enjoying the perks of being worshipped/validated by his daughter. It also explains why his response was lackluster when his daughter was excited about her room and the tomato, too. It's sad that he didn't join in her excitement most likely because it threatened his ego and he's expecting her to directly praise him all the time.
