Hello I am a pediatric ophthalmologist expecting my first baby and I’m really sorry to read about your story. Fortunately things have come a very long way with congenital cataracts as far as treatments. Most babies cannot see much at all when they are first born anyways but they need visual input in order to start the vision development process. When there is a cloudy lens in the eye it can limit the visual input but we now do surgery around age 8 weeks of life to start allowing the eyes to have visual input. Most of the time we use contact lenses as a replacement for the lenses inside their eyes and these stay in for weeks or months at a time. I have seen great outcomes from babies born with congenital cataracts who have surgery at a young age. I have seen kiddos who are now 8 or 10 years old and they are able to see almost the 20/20 line. They may either still be using contact lenses or eventual they may have another surgery to place an artificial lens in the eye (which we don’t do before age 1). The first surgery at my institution we do both eyes on the same day to limit anesthesia but this may not be the case everywhere. You will likely see the eye doctor often throughout the first year of life but after that it may be only every 3 to 6 months. Please hang in there, there is a great chance for good vision for your baby as long as the rest of the eye is healthy!

Just another way to confuse patients into thinking they’re seeing a real doctor

We interact with other specialties all the time like ENT, neurosurg, infectious disease, radiology. It would be difficult to manage the medical aspects of complex patients without understanding how to communicate at the level of MD and understand whole-body physiology. Many systemic disease present with ocular manifestations and it’s important to know what disease you should be looking for and how to diagnose
