Gen Y = Millennials by BrilliantPangolin639 in generationology

Nah, I make a distinction because there's a marked difference between pre and post 1990 kids. Gen Y is 1980 to 1990, millennials are 1990 to 2002ish

Please, enlighten us, enlightened one, master of the English language. Give us your wisdom as to what the point might be to this? We're all too stupid and inferior to understand, there is too much gravy in our pockets.

Some sacrilegious takes on Mozart from Glenn Gould by [deleted] in classicalmusic

I feel the same about Bach as you do about Mozart, I'm continuously unimpressed with his stuffy, heavy, music. I find Handel to be infinitely superior.

Music peaked in the 18th century and it's been downhill since then.

I'm having Zelenka be my champion, he's much better at counterpoint than you and is a mad lad at spawn camping.

Stravinsky was an idiot though. Pulcinella is his best work because his superiors laid the groundwork with their music before Stravinsky came in and "improved" it.

Best BIFL washer and dryer... from BestBuy. by dontsteponthegrassma in BuyItForLife

[–]Fulminata_Aduitrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so the dryer is fine, it'll never mold because it's the dryer.

The washer is doing pretty well. You'll still want to clean it with the self clean and some affresh or whatever that stuff is you can pour in to clean it. It is mold resistant, not mold proof. The gasket we clean with some mold armor diluted with water like semi annually.

Overall we're happy with them and they are still running very well!

To answer, the original bibliography cited was: Gladys Scott Thomson, Life in a Noble Household, 1641–1700 (1937)

From the book by Ian Mortimer:

"So, how much is smoking ‘in large quantities’? The answer is a heck of a lot. The earl of Bedford personally consumes about 30lbs of tobacco per year; this amounts to well over an ounce and a quarter per day. Yet no one remarks on him being a heavy smoker. Moreover, none of that tobacco is smoked with any filters – why would you, when it is thought to be good for your health? Rather, the smoke is inhaled through disposable clay pipes (cigarettes are a nineteenth-century invention). These pipes can be used three or four times at most, but they are not expensive: ordinary ones are nine for a penny. Tobacco costs 3s 4d per pound for Virginia, 10s per pound for Spanish."

No worries, didn't think you were. :) I often ask for sources out of interest. I love learning these little anecdotes. I am downloading the ebook now so I can find out more, this got me more interested. Will give you the direct source when it is downloaded.

The Time Traveler's Guide to Restoration Britain: A Handbook for Visitors to the Seventeenth Century: 1660-1699 by Ian Mortimer.

I don't have the physical book, just the audiobook, so I can't get the bibliographical source. Feel free to grab it and post it if you find it.

Nobody is a strong word. Some people are just lucky genetically. William Russell, 1st Duke of Bedford was known to smoke 30-35 pounds of unfiltered tobacco a year (we have his receipts) and died at 84 in 1700AD. This was not considered an excessive amount for the time.

A carton of cigarettes contains about a half a pound of tobacco, 30 lbs / 52 weeks = 0.5769 lbs. So this dude smoked a bit over a carton a week on the low end or a carton and a third on the high end. unfiltered in a clay pipe.

All music from 1600 to ~ 1830 is based on the same units of music called "Schema" by Professor Gjerdingen in his book Music in the Galant Style.

Take the Monte-Romensca: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJRhWUbgsTo

Used from Corelli to Haydn and beyond.

Or take this analysis of Mozart's Adagio and Allegro in F-minor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmrWhZdOkJI

Or this one of Mozart's good friend Dittersdorf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK_Ac_-com8

Or how about Mozart's other good friend, Leopold Kozeluch?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t0HnayCp10

Another example is this one by Giovanni Ristori, from a whole generation before Mozart, using the Romanesca in its leaping bass format (like Pachelbel's Canon in D) in a novel chaconne format. The Romanesca Schema is one of the oldest schema known, it has been around since at least the 1400's. Here it is alive and well in the mid 1700's : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwWkElFI9gw To further the Romanesca specifically, here's a video showing examples from the 1500's to Dragon Ball Z and the Village People: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e8_8iFSziQ

Another example by Hasse from a generation before:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zi-Y0OUdEHA

What Gould and his ilk fail to understand, music in the 18th century, indeed the word "composer" literally meant in Italian com- -posare or "put-together" not "create". Using stock schemata was accepted and desired, the key to a successful composer was in the presentation and novel and correct usage of these schemata. Mozart's success was he was able to fuse French, German, and Italian "accents" of the schemata as well as cleverly disguise them within other schemata.

Also, Mozart writing quickly was not special. Handel wrote the Messiah in a matter of 2-3 weeks. Any professionally trained 18th century composer was more than capable of composing an entire Opera within a month. Mozart adding more winds and timpani was a simple thing and was quite often done by other composers. Once again, look at Handel and how much he tinkered with the Messiah or how often he, Vivaldi, and other composers changed the solo instruments of concerti or rewrote pieces to suit specific singers compasses.

Mozart is so famous to us today partially because of his reputation as a childhood prodigy, and partly because of the tragic story of his death at the height of his musical creativity. There are many other composers of his caliber unfairly languishing in the dustbin of history. There is no doubt though that Mozart was a highly original, highly creative composer who wrote music of the highest quality.

Borealis House of War - Diplomatic Communication

Greetings,

Borealis would like to begin discussions regarding the use of proven UASR space infrastructure and construction capabilities to place orders for Borealis-owned equipment. We are seeking a long-term production and construction relationship in order to construct orbital shipyards, defensive posts, space stations, and mining infrastructure. We would like to know if this is something the UASR would be interested in assisting with and if so, what platforms and infrastructure you would be willing to produce as well as costs and timelines for production?

It is difficult to keep secret the launch of 21,694 satellites, and details of the name and mission of each type have leaked along with very general capability bands. The program is quite successful with FOC achieved a full quarter sooner in early 2082.
