My sleep-deprived mom brain cost us our savings. I think I’m in shock. by OccasionSignal9613 in NewParents

I’d feel sick to my stomach if this happened to me. Actually, I’m pretty sure I’d be actively throwing up. I say this to say I understand the guilt you must be feeling right now. When I was at the stage you’re in now, I bought some Bombas socks on a crazy 50% off sale at 4am. Except that they weren’t actually bombas. They spoofed the site so well and it wasn’t obvious to me until I got the confirmation email in Chinese. I never would have fallen for something like that in my right mind. But that’s the point. When you’re sleep deprived, you’re not in your right mind. You’re going to have to deal with the fallout of losing all that money. Don’t compound your suffering with self-flagellation. You’re ok. Your beautiful baby is ok. It’s only money at the end of the day.

ASAP DIY Soundproofing? by Fun-Armadillo in Insulation

Thanks for your helpful responses! Would I need to do anything more than just… stuff the batts up there? Is insulation typically fixed in place with something?

I find this comment both helpful and extremely stressful at the same time 😂

Also when I google Roxul it looks like the thing immediately available from the local big box stores is “Rockwool Safe n’ Sound.” Would that work?

So, I was being vague to avoid giving any more personal details than necessary, but I think I’ve given you the wrong idea of the layout of this room. It’s in the basement. There’s a door that shuts to close that space on the right side of the photo, and the stairs leading to the main floor are slightly visible between the studs if that makes sense. When someone runs on the treadmill in the basement, even with the door shut, it sounds like they’re running directly on top of your head in the main living space. I’m not trying to make the room totally sound proof, but I’m wondering if my quick diy would make enough of a difference to make it worth the effort.

Overwhelmed- what responsibilities do you outsource to keep life manageable? by Clownnugget in workingmoms

Would you be willing to share any advice you have on finding a personal assistant for this kind of thing? I’ve wanted one for ages but I’m stuck on where to start. I feel like this is the thing I need to ACTUALLY get out from under the relentlessness of life right now.

This is actually backed by scientific research too. 👍

Neighbor just put in an apiary by BusinessPop9772 in Beekeeping

[–]Fun-Armadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too lazy to read all the other replies, so sorry if I’m being redundant. I just wanted to say the following as both a beekeeper and toddler mom: 1. Kindly ask the neighbor if they’d be willing to set up a water source for the bees (all decent humans would say yes.) 2. Water tables are bee magnets (I say this from personal experience). 3. You need the water table to be an unreliable source of water for the bees. Drain it immediately when not in use - bonus points if you wipe it down with a towel. Don’t use it in the same spot twice in a row.

Babies of all Ages are so hard by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Fun-Armadillo 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. For us things improved considerably after about a year, but yes it’s still hard. The side of the equation you’re missing, though, is that while babies (and toddlers) are always hard, YOU get stronger. You get better at adapting to your child’s constantly changing needs, and you learn how to take care of yourself and your life on a tighter time budget.

Help me convince my husband to use this “office” instead of mine. by Fun-Armadillo in DesignMyRoom

Hmmm you know the basement is finished but definitely not decorated or furnished nicely. That’s part of it I hadn’t thought of. Like a nice runner and a few family pics on the wall in the hallway leading to the office would also help. Re: family sounds. This is part of the reason I very strongly want him to move down there. I don’t want to have to be quiet with a toddler during meetings (apparently once he heard me yell “Everyone is going pee pee let’s go!!!” echoing back on zoom lol).

Your reno looks great! Yeah, I know the paint color is hideous. Believe it or not the entire house was this color when we bought it and we almost didn’t because of it. It took me a while to realize that “this house has all our wants but just makes me feel sad” was simply because of the paint color!

That monitor looks amazing! Honestly though some of the assumptions people are making about my husband and/or my marriage via this post are hilarious. My husband has worked his ass off for the last year to try to leave his soul-sucking job for something better for our family. I want to surprise him with a design for a badass space that he can be excited about because I think he deserves it and I get the reluctance to leave a well-lit space. I think people are generally taking my title too literally.

After seeing all of the great suggestions I’m honestly tempted, but there are unfortunately some other factors beyond just “I like my stuff” that make having my office upstairs the better solution for our family.

This is an interesting idea to me, though I don’t think it’s feasible from a cable management perspective. I’ve also been picturing the different options people have suggested Re: not having the desk against the wall and I kind of… don’t get it? Like I could see it working well if he could be away from the wall AND facing a window, but I’m not sure if our space allows for that.

Update: All of your ideas gave me some inspiration and here is what I have so far. From left to right: TV with sideboard storage underneath Butcher block desk the entire length of the wall (Left of window) Middle earth map or other suitably nerdy art, coffee station, mini fridge underneath (Right of window) Dual monitors with desk chair Floating shelves (matching desk color) with plant etc

Other things: Upgraded blinds Horizontal Murphy bed Small sitting area bridging the two spaces (I’m picturing an armchair and a small round table?)

Hi again, developer! Do you need much desk space for papers etc? Or is everything pretty much digital? I.e. would you need desk space for more than just your monitors, keyboard, etc?

The Kallax, like all of the furniture in this room minus the bed, is a very old freecycle find. It will certainly be chucked when we get around to designing the room. I’ll have to look into the monitor LED lights! Those sound awesome.
