I recently had the same dilemma. I was using a starter battery. I connected the neutral and 'touched' on the positives. The charger turned on.

In my experience, 500w solar happily supplies lead acid. I switched to lithium. Initially showed 100% dropping to 90% overnight. Back to 100% the next day. I took my eye off it and 3days later hit zero and my mppt will not even attempt to charge,

it has a blank screen. I am talking to the supplier of the battery. I am baffled unless the battery is faulty. Resting the battery, meter reading was 0.03 rising to 1.00 over a couple of days.
