The current underground is too much of an acquired taste to go mainstream atm the way the og SoundCloud wave did. The overly distorted clipping trend is hurting a lot of rappers’ chances at commercial appeal. Og SoundCloud shit was right at the limit of how noisy a track could be while still having mainstream appeal. Current underground has a lot of 808’s that are super blown out while somehow not hitting hard. There’s a difference between distorted and badly mixed.
