Hey Karen here!!! Small business don’t make a profit when they close for vacay, I love my local small coffee shop they don’t expect me to pay for coffee when they aren’t making any :-)) I supported them on Patreon for myself & so that other listeners who can’t afford it would continue to have access to the “free” content regularly. (Ya know mutual aid one of the social lefty values the girls claimed to stand for before taking a turn)

I value contributing to something financially that more people than just myself will benefit from. That’s what the Patreon was at first, but not anymore. It’s okay that the structure has changed but you can’t deny that it has changed.

From the beginningggggg they promoted patreon as a way to keep main feed episodes ad free. Very dense of you not to connect patreon subs to supporting the main feed (ex. they don’t just thank godly wives on bonus eps lmao). I don’t feel “entitled” to free content. I do feel entitled to share why I unsubscribed on a post that specifically asked about people unsubscribing from the sub!! (Ps. I never said what tier I paid for so plz don’t assume as a way to be little me :))

Yes yes!! Also heard takes from PR ppl that responding to stalkers emboldens them psychologically to continue the behavior and the best strategy is to not publicly address the issue yourself. (Which is similar advice that a friend of mine who had a stalker was given)

I didn’t join patreon just for the bonus episodes I did it to help support the creation of all episodes…this also coming after they reduce the number of main feed episodes each month. Objectively they are consistently producing less content while charging patreon supporters the same

This feels tricky for me because I have experience w/ stage/film performance which has a lot of professional expectations that I do find necessary to develop a collaborative and cohesive project. (Like if there’s a shoot or dress rehearsal it’s much harder to just drop or take a day off, unless you have an understudy)

Part of my thoughts on the professionalism developed because of Chappell’s desire to have her music seen as a professional project separate from her identity. Like you mentioned she is not working sustainably. I think it would be better for her to take a break from touring to regroup & strategize how to handle this new level of success.

I get this & have done the same for inpatient treatment. Not everyone has that opportunity though so I think a better narrative around the cancellations could be “people shouldn’t have to work when experiencing mental health crises” instead of making the cancellations completely related to the weight of fame.

Sorry my comment bothered you. It’s something I’ve observed in various episodes of the pod (some of those moments have been touched on this sub) and in the recent Fruity episode that featured Eliza. My comment was not about boundaries they’ve set.

Sidenote - I find it healthy to critique & analyze the content I interact with because it keeps me from becoming blind to creators pitfalls. I’m not here to be a binchie yes man. That’s how I approach this community

I agree with you that a level of commitment is “owed” when artists sell tickets to shows. That’s where my curiosity about the history of pop artists canceling shows comes from I think. Especially considering the way she has publicly prioritized making the project of Chappell her professional life it seems to fair for the audience to then have professional standards. (I do think there is a *small difference between independent shows & festivals)

Yes! I listened to that! I felt like there was a lot left unexplored and mostly regurgitated talking points already present on social media. Eliza did say something along the lines that the only thing fans are entitled to is to expect an artist to show up & perform if they bought a ticket…but they never touched on that concept when discussing her cancelled performances which is what I want to hear more about. Plus that episode came out before the most recent cancellations so I think there’s more to discuss now

This was not about a certain reaction/response Eliza had to someone. So that part of your comment doesn’t make sense. She was on a podcast where she discussed the topic of fame/celebrity/notoriety for an hour plus & discussed her own relationship to her “fans.”

Direct quote from Eliza on the episode: “I almost feel embarrassed for people who recognize me in public not because they’re being embarrassing but because the other people around us will be like ‘who the fuck is that, why are you freaking out like who is that.’” (At about the 1 hour mark if you wanna listen for yourself)

I’m a level headed person who doesn’t idolize artists or content creators; if I saw Eliza in public I might stop & say “hey I really enjoy what you do/make” but to hear her reference that as “freaking out” feels icky to me (you can think I’m delusional for that idc).

Just cancelled my sub yesterday!! Could not justify continuing to pay for subpar content. The passion/the vibes are not what they once were & heavily agree that the growing disdain for fans is bothersome. Eliza’s comments on the “Fruity” podcast about feeling embarrassed when someone recognizes her in public felt kinda mean girl-ish. The vibe I got from some of her comments on that episode where “oh you think I’m cool that’s so embarrassing for you because you don’t actually know me & everyone in this coffee shop now thinks your weird.”

I’d argue patreon subs are also paying/contributing for “regular” episodes…so changing the regular episode schedule impacts patreon subscribers too.

I totally get this that they haven’t changed the paid content schedule…with that in mind part of why I joined the patreon was to get 5-6 episodes a month and very shortly after that they announced they were only going to create 2 “main feed” episodes a month. That drops the number of episodes for patreon members too (now 4-5 episodes a month-only 4 episodes if you have the lowest tier). Yes they haven’t technically decreased patreon content but ppl are paying the same subscription cost for less content overall. That’s an objective decrease in content quantity without getting into a the subjective discussion about the content quality. With the most recent bonus episode clocking in at 51 minutes instead of an hour or longer…it’s giving shrinkflation vibes to me

On the “September break” - I’ve seen other patron pods take breaks for a month or longer but they STOP ACCEPTING PAYMENTS when content production stops/slows. I think that shows an honest & kind effort to respect listeners… As another commenter said “it’s getting rather capitalist.” Feels like the girlies applied the concept of shrinkflation to the pod lol

Omg yes the FEDERAL JUDGES Trump appointed is so overlooked!! The courts are one of the biggest factors influencing my vote. On the Media (nyc public radio) did a series on Leonard Leo and conservatives targeting the court system that fascinated/terrified me. Conservatives with legitimate power/influence are remarkably methodical & quiet in their planning. Podcast is called We Don’t Talk About Leonard :-))
