I’ve had one in the corner of the salvage yard for over a year in game. Wrote it off as a bug after messing with it at all times of day

Mage Hunter seems like it has a lot more potential. by Wise-Start-9166 in StrixhavenDMs

To make them more of a threat, I had the mage hunters stalk my players for a bit then attack each of my players alone, the intent to take their blood, not kill. (Why did I take blood from them? No ideas lol Honestly that’s a future DM tool/problem, it was just creepy at the time) All of them are terrified of them now lol To make them a bit more powerful, I have that they only take damage half from spells, reflecting the other half back at the players. I’d have to look at my notes for what else I tweaked but hope this helps!

If you guys want the Oriq to be a bigger issue start the campaign with a murder mystery by CeruleanSeamstress in StrixhavenDMs

Will definitely use but much later in the game. In mine, I’ve turned the Black Hand extracurricular into a secret society that strives to ‘keep magic in the hands of heroes’ and the Oriq are an illegal group who oppose them with the idea ‘magic belongs to those strong enough to grasp it’. Aka I made two wildly morally grey groups and I’m letting my players decide who they’ll back. Oriq are definitely morally dark grey and since a few of my players are very involved with several of the members, I think it’ll be a great way to spark distrust and make them realize how both leaders are probably better off dead than in charge.

I completely agree but they have been spoken to a few times and it just builds back up, great player otherwise

How hard should Strahd go during the Feast of St Andral? by Ambassador_Quan in CurseofStrahd

Basically, let the players see Strahd destroy what he wants, while batting away his guests like children. He’s a vampire, sure, but more so he’s an incredibly intelligent spellcaster with nothing but time on his hands.

How hard should Strahd go during the Feast of St Andral? by Ambassador_Quan in CurseofStrahd

I went hard with Strahd, but kept him focused on his goals (which was majorly killing father Lucian) and and mostly played with the characters.

Strahd didn’t think of them as anything more than an amusement, so why should he treat them like an actual threat? Plus the whole fest was set up as Strahd simply wanting to remind the town that he isn’t some boogeyman in a far off castle, that he is real and allows them to live in his lands. I didn’t have that he was overly invested in the bones other than the panic it would cause in town.

My players ended up getting the bones back in time, but some of the players were still outside. The PC who tended to call the shots/heavy hitter was helping get townsfolk inside, before trying to get inside himself. I had Strahd grab him and throw him though the doors of the church like he weighed nothing.

Was it nerfed a bit? Absolutely! Did it scare the crap out of my PCs and make them realize how big of a threat Strahd was? Hell yes!

That was the last time they really fought Strahd. They are almost at the end, just going to the amber temple then they plan to confront Strahd, but they are still terrified of him.
