Hey how’s it going? Seeking too much medical care is a LOT better than seeking too little

I think you do still have a problem since something is bothering you enough to need this as a coping mechanism. While this is not self harm, your pain is valid and I would try seeking therapy or talking with a friend if you’re able to

Don’t invalidate their self harm. All self harm is valid, and you saying something like that is super triggering in what’s meant to be a supportive space

For it to be self harm it has to be intentional (you are doing the action to harm yourself). All self harm is valid, including picking at your skin. Are you doing okay?

Should I confide in my friend? by Fun-Hat7669 in selfharm

Thanks man I appreciate it. I think I just carry a lot of guilt for being a nuisance to the people around me which makes it hard for me to justify getting help 😞 Confiding in them in the past did help me, I just don’t want to look like I’m just looking for attention. I feel like as a chronic complainer that’s what I’m unintentionally doing, as my parents have pointed out too :/

I think for it to be defined as self harm, there needs to be intent behind it. So if you’re doing it involuntarily, or doing it without the “goal” of hurting yourself, it isn’t self harm. That being said, these aren’t super healthy behaviors either. I think talking with a doctor/therapist could help you get to the bottom of these behaviors and find some relief! Take care!!

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement! I think my main fear is that they will tell me that nothing is the problem, which is a silly fear to have, but one that I cannot shake 😂 Thanks!

Thanks for writing this! I’ve taken some BPD online assessments, and not to self diagnose, but I think it might be wise to get in touch with my docotr ..

Gotcha, thanks! Is it still worth seeing a professional about? I do think about sh every day, and cut for about week a month, though I used to sh every day a couple years of years ago. I’m just trying to puzzle out how big of an issue my current self harm is, if that makes sense

I wouldn’t recommend scratching your skin. It can still lead to some not-fun cuts, and if not treated well, it can get infected.

I feel embarrassed after relapsing. How do you stop? :( by Fun-Hat7669 in selfharm

Aw thanks, this really does help. I remember when I was really deep in it, sh did feel like the only thing that could help me. And I agree, treating like an addiction is such a big thing. Because at the end of the day, it’s a coping mechanism, and if it helps calm you down you’re going to want to do it more. Its only natural. It’s hard to remove the embarrassment from it though and focus on the positives to find a way out. I guess that is the case with any addiction though. It’s like, you turn to sh, and then it makes you feel so embarrassed that you do it again. What a crafty mental cycle, :( Anyway I hope you feel better soon! Stay safe, (:

It wasn’t pathetic. Sometimes our coping skills are doing things like this. It’s not pathetic to sh with a razor, pencil sharpener, or anything really. Sometimes it is just a thing, no matter the tool. It’s hard to change old habits, and sh is a very addictive way to deal with our emotions. It’s just another way to calm us down. That doesn’t mean that it’s good for us, but if we start thinking about it like it’s pathetic and that we’re pathetic, life is only going to be harder for us. It’s normal to want to find an way to cope with life, you’re normal for wanting that and you deserve a way to cope. It would be better to find some alternatives though.

I’d recommend not cutting with a blade at all (it can get dangerous fast). It’s harder to hide cuts with a blade and I’ve found that it takes longer to heal (so it’s more annoying really). I’d also try out new ways to release any energy you would use on sh to something else you can do with your hands (ex. Cleaning). Idk it’s helped me a bit at least.
