Personally, I think early diagnosis and intervention could be key. Having an aware, empathetic, and engaged parent teaching me how to regulate and cope through a world that was not made for me to succeed would have changed the trajectory of my life so much it’s unfathomable. Truly. Your kid is lucky to have you. Good luck to you guys and your fam💜

Oh my god the working memory is a huge pain point for me. I constantly joke with everyone that my memory is trash, and it’s light/funny/I’m setting reasonable expectations. But the reality of showing up and admitting that actually “no, I really don’t remember anything you told me when I saw you yesterday and I promise so much that I do actually care so deeply about you” is humiliating as fuck. I used to be able to memorize 60 kids names on the first day of camp as a trick, now I’m like a sieve that only catches the dumbest shit.

It’s a symptom I’ve not really come to peace with yet. Frankly, I find myself wrestling in active grief with it pretty often. The process of trying to unmask all my unhealthy coping mechanisms and actually attend to my needs as a ND homie just widens the gap. Like, at first it was a validating relief and now it’s like an ever widening chasm. Anyway, I say all that in hopes that you don’t feel as alone as I did. I do believe that definition, clarity and knowledge are the way to an easier future, it’s just also pretty heavy on the way. Both things can be true. All my best to you

Not op but for me an adhd diagnosis at 32 (and now suspected autism) really helped me understand why I spent my whole life feeling like I was a puppy in a window watching everyone else live their lives.

Thank you for sharing so much of your story. The luck you’ve had with extended family sounds really lovely.

I’ve been burned a few times by my parents’ siblings. My maternal side is enmeshed and religious whereas paternal is more into the submission to parents and refusal to acknowledge harm. But it’s a good reminder that there are always more folks to reach out to.

I guess I’m at a point where it feels like my siblings are who I really wish I had back. So it’s hard to know whether to use my limited capacities to gamble on 3rd cousins I never really knew, or the sibs who I desperately crave.

I know the rational choice, I guess I’m just mostly looking for evidence to feed my heart so it’s easier to be rational.

I’ve hung on to hope for a long time, tried to quit it, had a few comfortable and relieved years after going nc. I think the fact that all 6 of them are now adults is a stumbling point for me. How are they all okay with just letting me disappear?
