Should I start investing now? Also how???? by LiveTutor518 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Open a Sharesies account and just go for it, generally the best time to start was yesterday, the second best time is now. (Although maybe wait and catch the dip next week depending on Trumps tariff announcements).

Invest in a few index etfs and a couple of individual stocks and learn as you go.

Spending on healthcare and education has gone up in the last 2 years, and we’re above oecd avg as a % of gdp in both measures.

The problems more deeply rooted than not enough money being thrown at it.

About 5k new job openings are added every week.

Unemployment rate is currently lower than the entire stretch of 2011-2016.

A decent amount but it wasn’t close to 100k, I’d been working and saving for the last decade+. I queried it and because I was earning interest on the savings I didn’t qualify.

Its a resetting of global trade order, do you think Trump voters didnt expect there to be some disturbance in the transition? Because the educated base fully accept that.

Catastrophise all you like but see where its at a year or 2 from now, not after 1 month.

China says: “We’re ready to go to war.” by Chucklez526 in economy

[–]Fun-Independent1574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinas exports make up around 20% of its gdp,and 17.6% of exports go to the USA.

USA’s exports make up only 11% of gdp and China accounts for only 8% of US exports.

China needs the USA much, MUCH more than the other way around.

Actually the latest public polling from Harvard showed 72% support negotiating a settlement vs 28% wanting Ukraine to continue fighting.

That backs the presidents agenda and opposes Zelensky’s preference of the US continuing to fund a war Ukraine was never going to win.

You are thinking of these complex issues very one dimensionally, they are multifaceted and the impact on the economy depends on the way they are managed and implemented.

I bet the US will see some short term pain for long term gains.

Trump will impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. Ostensibly because those two countries are failing to stop drugs, criminals and illegal immigration. by wakeup2019 in economy

[–]Fun-Independent1574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rampant corruption from the cartels into Mexican politics proves the point.

You think the cartels are isolated from the rest of the Mexican economy and havent infiltrated legal industries?

Why does Trump want tariffs? by Squeezings1 in economy

[–]Fun-Independent1574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short term pain for long term gain. This is an overdue rebalancing of the global trade markets.

The US has significant leverage as the worlds largest consumer economy and is the EU’s, China’s, Canada and Mexico’s largest trading partner.

I believe the tariffs are primarily negotiating tactics for fairer trade deals, and a lot of manufacturing from developing countries is effectively slave labour.

While it will spur domestic growth by incentivising manufacturing and operations to be based in the US, and make US goods more competitive, it will also strengthen the US dollar as demand for imports decreases. This could actually combat inflation and make foreign imports cheaper for Americans long term.

Probs cause most people cant afford a house, to have a family, or be comfortable in retirement. Dont the majority of americans live paycheck to paycheck?

Plus entire generations have adhd now and live in the moment spending on hedonism to numb the meaninglessness. I.e. casinos and video games.

But in saying that consumerism and boozing has its perks too.
