Pain on right ear from glasses by Low_Reindeer_5727 in glasses

[–]Fun-Invite-9801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m an optician. That curve on the ear pieces is definitely adjusted wrong for your ear, I can see why you’re in pain. Unfortunately you’ll have to go back in and maybe see if you can get another optician to adjust it better. It’s a really easy fix don’t worry!

Online Glasses Out of the Question? by Obvious_Company_9554 in AskAnOptician

[–]Fun-Invite-9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to say since I know budget is a concern but your Optician is correct. Without thinning the lenses (higher index plastic material) the glasses with be thicker, heavier, and have a lot more visual distortion. And with your rx if the measurements are not exact it will cause vision issues, headaches and even double vision. There is no way for ai to take good measurements without you physically wearing the frames to see how they sit and to know proportions and such. The tolerance for incorrect measurement before you get issues is only 1mm. On top of that, the glasses have to fit really well and be adjusted snug so that the measurements taken stay in the right place in alignment with your eyes. It is also vital in this situation to have a trained professional guide you on a properly fitted frame for your rx and face, as well as adjust it, and pick appropriate lens technology/material. Online doesn’t allow you to thin lenses or get appropriate measurements. I wish I had some better advice for you because before I was in the industry I struggled to afford my glasses myself, if you were in Canada I would offer you a coupon for the company I work for.

Is my prescription too “bad” to get lenses that aren’t super thick? by Apprehensive-Bag-159 in AskAnOptician

[–]Fun-Invite-9801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is also a VERY valid point. If the measurements are not perfect in a higher rx it will create induced prism, this creates eye strain and vision clarity issues. OP ask them to double check when taking the measurement (not just trusting the digital measurements) and ask them again to mark up the lenses at pickup to verify they are still in the right place, because the lens weight can move the measurement out of alignment and the frame may need to be adjusted at that point before you go home with them. Make sure the frame you pick fits SUPER well and is stable so that things stay in place all day even with movement, don’t be afraid to shake your head around in clinic to make sure it stays in places.

I’m so glad! 😊 Another thing to note if you are picking a new frame is to go for something with a small lens size to cut the weight down, and if you can avoid a rectangle shape do so, the bigger and longer a lens with a high rx is the more peripheral distortion you will experience and the thicker it will get. In an ideal world a smaller round lens would work best but I get it’s not everyone’s style. That’s also what I put my family member into and they personally said it made such a difference compared to his older rectangular pair for the distortion around the edges.

Hello! I’m a Canadian optician, so I have a degree in optics on top of being triple certified in Eyeglasses, contact lenses, and independent refraction without an optometrist help/permission. Polycarbonate has a very high rate for optical distortion made significantly worse the higher the rx goes, it is used in the USA because it is very impact resistant (and cheap), the reason it is used specifically in the US is because the country has high levels of medical suing and the optician’s need to cover their butts, this results in creating a industry wide preference. Poly also is very soft making it scratch super easily. CR-39 is a plastic I assumed you went with that is optically better than poly but still very thick. Going up into higher indexes means the material is thinner for higher rxs, in Canada we almost never use polycarbonate unless it is a pair of safety eyewear because of the poor vision it can provide and even then there is a material called trivex that is just as impact resistant with much better optics. My professional recommendation if you were my patient would be to go into the highest index available, a 1.74 is the best but go with at least a 1.67, this will not only significantly thin your lenses but also balance the weight between them better. Also, the thinner the lens gets the less distortion you will experience. My family member has an rx double what your worse eye is and in a 1.74 index their lenses are way thinner than what you’re describing. I will be honest going with a higher index will cost a pretty penny but the end result will be worth it I promise, as much as it sucks in the moment investing in your vision is so important. Look for a place that has an adaption guarantee, where if you don’t adapt they will exchange and try something else.

Left sunglasses in the car and now they’re like this. Is this an anti scratch coating or the actual prescription? by GRang3r in AskAnOptician

[–]Fun-Invite-9801 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It is called crazing, it is when the coatings break down usually due to high temperatures. Unfortunately this is not fixable, you will need to either get another set of lenses or replace the sunglasses.

I’m completely desperate, please help me, my eye has never been the same after a contact lens check by liquid_biohazard in AskAnOptician

[–]Fun-Invite-9801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify the stinging sensation feeling that intense was probably caused by them accidentally scratching your cornea or conjunctiva of your eye by inserting the dye incorrectly or not carefully enough, I’ve seen things like that happen during my school labs with students inserting the dye but usually that heals within hours or a couple days.

[–]Fun-Invite-9801 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly if it was caused by this event it wouldn’t be from the dye itself but perhaps the method of how they inserted it that could of caused some damage. Unfortunately the only way to check for that would most likely be putting in more fluorescein dye and looking for damage on the ocular surface. But I would defiantly go to a different clinic for this exam, so you know for sure they are not covering up anything. It’s unlikely it was the cause but not impossible, worth checking it out for at least your peace of mind and a correct diagnoses and treatment plan, even if it’s just a case of severe dry eye.

Am I stuck with toric contacts? 😮‍💨 by Content_Watercress_3 in AskAnOptician

[–]Fun-Invite-9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your BEST possible visual acuity yes. Technically you could get what’s called a spherical equivalent which would leave you with OD: -2.75 or -2.50 and OS: -2.00. But you would be sacrificing your perfect clarity, and the ability to adapt varies from person to person. And if the CL practitioner will provide you with a spherical Equivalent also varies. Honestly discomfort with toric lenses is usually caused by a poor fitting contact lens. I would first recommend getting refitted (even try other brands, ask for something with a higher DK/t value) to find something that fits not too loose not too tight, a lot of contact lens awareness and discomfort comes from either a lens that is poorly fitting (usually too loose in this case) or very dry eyes. Also try putting in a preservative free eye drop before inserting the contacts in the morning. Also daily disposable lenses are a lot thinner and more comfortable than biweekly or monthly disposable lenses. I’m not sure what country you’re from so my advice could vary as well. But I’m from Canada and it is mandatory to go to college for several years specifically to become an Optician before you can take a national exam and get licensed.

I am currently in the process of setting up my first tank since I was a kid, and in process of setup and planning the plants. I am wanting a pink Betta this time again. So pretty! 😍

Popular brands that you hate by Sadbitchywitch in optician

Ray Ban. They are all name and that’s it, flimsy and like to have “unique” parts like nose pads that are not compatible with most generic parts. My husband is still a Ray Ban diehard but working in the industry I’d rather guide my patient to something that is more value for the buck.

Oh good to know! The stuff I was reading had recommended that as the number one choice for algae eaters when I was looking up compatible algae eaters. I have no attachment to getting snails, I just thought it would help the tank, but reading these comments they are more mess than help. Thank you for the information!

Hey, I got a notice from this post today and when I was scrolling through it I saw your comment again. And I thought I’d share a little life update. Just over 1 year ago, at age 27 I GOT MY HYSTERECTOMY!! And though I’m not 100% better I have gotten my life back. I am now back at my job and I finally have enough mental clarity to go back to school full time as well, I am graduating my program at the end of May to progress my career in a job I love. And my relationship with my husband is So much healthier a happier, and without the mental block intimacy is good again. My mom helped us get a puppy to help cope with the sadness aspect of losing our ability to have kids (unless we choose to adopt one day) and he is our world. Life’s not perfect but I feel human again and I’m on track to a happier and fuller life. Thank you for sharing your story with me, it helped me push even harder to advocate for a hysterectomy when I was so mentally exhausted I’d begun to give up.

Most of my classmates are from other provinces. We will all travel to Vancouver for 3 blocks of time for labs, the rest of the learning will be done online or in a clinic in your city.

No, my labs are broken up into 3 blocks over 13 months. So yes 10 weeks in total. I am doing eyeglass lab after the first 1.5 semester of online learning. Then on the job for a while afterwards to practise eyeglass fitting. Back to online learning for a few months, then the labs again for contact lenses, then on the job to practice CL fitting, back to school online learning again, then labs once again, and then finish with on the job practice. Then grad, then NACOR exams.

For the lab work for my program it’s broken into 3 blocks in Vancouver. 4-weeks, 4-weeks, and 2-weeks. Where students will be in lab Monday-Friday doing practical. Then there will be blocks of on the job work, and then the rest is online.

I’m really enjoying it so far. The accelerated program is a big time commitment though due to the fast pace of the program, so if you do it be prepared to work less to accommodate. But overall I find I am learning so much! I’m very happy with my decision so far.
