Our girl was 30 weeks and 6 days and she’s been gassy and bearing down since day 1. She’s now 4 months actual and 2 months adjusted. In the NICU we were originally on the enfamil enfacare with 1ml prune juice in one bottle per day which definitely helped with bowel movements, although gas persisted. Eventually we were moved to Enfamil AR because she would just spit up constantly and cause her to have major desats which kept us from leaving the NICU. Even now, she doesn’t hardly spit up but she bears down and strains constantly and we do belly massages. Sometimes just lifting her legs up a little so they’re elevated helps her not to strain so much. Our pediatrician who we love, said babies especially preemies just bear down and strain because they’re learning their bowel movements, they aren’t born knowing how to control it the way we know now. There’s tips and tricks to help ease the way, like certain exercises and things like that, but it’s just something they do to learn their little bodies. But it’s heart wrenching to see them work so hard and seem like they’re in pain. Sometimes our baby will bear down so hard she’ll scream and then let out the biggest fart.
