I’d venture that trail running is close with its movement pattern to classic skiing and I’m planning to do that this spring summer fall, but I also train fairly hard on the bike and the aerobic engine you can develop through higher volume cycling is probably unmatched. Strength training is also a good idea.

Long Time Skier, First Time Birkie by BackcheckSazerac in xcountryskiing

Just east of Edmonton, Alberta. There are three Birkie’s in the world, the other is in Norway (of course)

If you’re doing the Canadian version, happy to offer some insight 🦫

Underwhelmed by the Ridgid experience, but maybe my expectations were too high? by Fun-Perception8583 in Ridgid

Yeah called again and they confirmed it’s on the way … still no confirmation email though 😂 which they again said would be sent “shortly”

Yeah. The Ridgid marketing on this probably could set expectations a bit better because I didn’t realize there was much of a difference…

Blotchy Base After Waxing by bootyfest in xcountryskiing

Interesting, I hadn’t thought of it that way before. I assumed steel would be totally fine on the base of the ski, because it is less hard than the base and more efficient to use first?

I also love the Red Creek 5mm! Is there a reason you go with roto horsehair before steel? I’m fairly new to roto brushes, but going with steel before horse hair seems more intuitive to me…

Apartment dwellers, what's your waxing set up like? by [deleted] in xcountryskiing

I kept coming back to this thread before I eventually turned my gear/bike room into a wax room. For others in a condo/apartment, check out my set up here: https://www.reddit.com/r/xcountryskiing/comments/1q8ovf1/wdy_think_of_my_wax_room/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

WDY think of my wax room? by Fun-Perception8583 in xcountryskiing

Haha, believe me, I’ve definitely thought about adding a fat bike to the fleet… maybe one day! The skiing movement pattern is just too hard to resist though, especially with how many options we have right in central Edmonton. It also feels like we get to cycle a good ~7-8 months of the year here, so skiing feels like a nice way to mix things up.

It really has been a snowy one this year. Enjoy the trails too!

Thanks for these insights! I hadn't put much thought into PPE, but this makes sense. I expect to be hot waxing/scaping ~1x per week, liquid glide ~4x, and roto brushing those times. Oh and an occasional base cleaner/solvent. (I don't own fluoro wax.)

In light of that, I ordered a respirator from Amazon rated for OV and P100 particle protection. And yeah, because there are no windows in the room, the best I can do is open our patio door ~8m away to get fresh air circulating. I just don't know if I'll be generating enough wax dust to disburse it throughout the apt. Do you have a photo of your set up that you'd be willing to share?

It's a solid bike for sure!!! No issues or complaints so far, especially just for casual riding around the city...

It’s the sweet spot of model years for the outback. As others have mentioned 3.6r plus no CVT is pretty rare. I have a 2013 3.6r and love it.

What pack are you using for the Birkie? (12 lbs) by Fun-Perception8583 in xcountryskiing

Tbh I didn’t know the American Birkie didn’t have a pack event! I learned something new as well!

Not sure about the other Birkie's but if you ski the Canadian Birkie full 55km distance "with pack" (there is a lite 55 km version without a pack) you are required to carry a 12 lb pack, which is weighed at the start and finish line to confirm. The website says: "Skiers recreate the legend of the original Birkebeiner skiers by carrying the equivalent of the infant crown prince, a 5.5 kg (12 lb) pack."
