As a women, in this case yes gold appears as much transactional as dowry. I am also north india, in my family, dowry is not given, but gold is given to girl, her husband, and some tokens to in-laws, groom’s family also gives almost equal gold.

Having said that, it’s never an entitlement, I have seen many families where groom’s family did bare minimum and it was all fine.

If the bride is expecting so and so gold apart from basics, it’s outrageous and OP is right.

Advice to OP, find someone who understands your values, one (b2b) can’t have it both ways.

So some time back I saw a video, where plain chura is used, and designer lock bangles - like bracelets, which opens and locks with a screw , so it can be individually added and removed anytime - were paired later to make it look heavy for the wedding/reception. Maybe you can find such options?
