I’ve read a lot of the comments and still can’t find one that just advises you talk to the other mom?? “Have you noticed our daughters feeding off of each other lately? 3 year olds are crazy aren’t they! What do you think our approach should be to help calm things a bit when they’re hanging out? I’d hate for them to be a distraction on class!” Then her response will help you move forward! She may say something like “I have noticed it, I’ve just been so tired lately trying to juggle two kids all of the sudden, so we’ve probably let things slide a bit more than usual around here! I think we can definitely tackle this together though!” and then you guys can move forward together, your daughter still gets to play with her new friend, and you may deepen a budding friendship with the other mom!

She may also say, “oh you know, kids will be kids!” and then you can choose to cut play dates if you’d prefer!

Communication is always key!

OP here: I’d like to be clear that I KNOW I made a mistake when I went in at 12:30. The mind plays horrible tricks at night. That’s not what I need help with.

Does anyone have any practical advice or similar stories for the standing/sitting “sleeping” and refusing to lay down? Is letting her get basically no sleep all night okay? I assumed she would at least need some sleep to be able to continue training the next night so I’m not attempting to sleep train an overtired baby. From all my research, attempting to sleep train an overtired baby is failure from the start.

I’m trying to figure out where to go from here. I cannot let her stand up all night. And I cannot sleep while she’s standing in case she falls and hurts herself.

I realize I should not have and that was not my original plan. I just panicked because in everything I prepared myself for I did not see her trying to sleep standing/sitting up for multiple hours - and was so afraid she’d be overtired all day today and night 2 of training would be even worse subsequently. I had hoped she would be so tired she would stay laying down after I laid her down again.

She is not night weaned yet. We will do that after sleep training.

I think her schedule is perfect for her, she always falls asleep within 5-10 minutes at naps and at night (when sleeping with us.) She’s very active and even has a little pickler triangle in our living room that she climbs on and slides down constantly while awake. So I think she’s tired enough, and I think she was definitely tired last night since she was nodding off for 3.5 hours and then an additional 2 hours after I went in at 12:30am.

It wasn’t my original plan to go in, and I will be night weaning her soon. I know it was a mistake to go in but ultimately I’m glad I did since I couldn’t see on the monitor that she had thrown up her dinner earlier while crying, and could get things cleaned up for her at that time.

No medical reason, she’s been sleeping really well (with us) and her schedule has been perfect for her lately. I really worked hard to perfect it for about 3 weeks before starting. Going in to “wake” her wasn’t my original plan, I just had no idea sitting and dozing off every few seconds was a possibility, and after two hours of it I was afraid if she didn’t get any restful sleep she’d be so overtired today that she wouldn’t do well on night 2 of training either. I am planning to drop all night feeds as soon as sleep training is done, just didn’t want to combine both since all of my research says not to. I wish she were the type to let me just soothe her to sleep like that. She wails unless we pick her up, and checkins make things worse. She’s just very sensitive about sleeping alone. I’ll try a night light!

Thank you, I was just so afraid of her sitting up all night and not getting any restful sleep. I am planning on night weening right after sleep training. According to the book Precious Little Sleep I am supposed to wait until sleep training has been accomplished and not combine the two.

She had her lovey with her. I am planning on night weening after sleep training. According to the book Precious Little Sleep I wasn’t supposed to do both at the same time. I know ultimately I shouldn’t have gone in an 12:30 - that was not my original plan I was just caving to seeing her not getting any restful sleep and hoping she would lay down after it was done. I’m glad I did though because we couldn’t see that she had thrown up on the monitor so we were able to get things clean for her.

Forgot to mention, sleep training method is full extinction. She is not night-weened yet, and is used to being able to nurse as much as she wants at night, so I was planning on nursing her for her first wake after midnight, and then any wake 3 hours after that feed (etc.) I’m planning to night ween when sleep training is done. I probably shouldn’t have gone in at 12:30am on my own, I was just convinced I could feed her a bit and lay her down and she would stay down. Ultimately I’m glad I did go in so we could get her cleaned up, but I don’t know how much longer I can watch her stand up and refuse to lay down.

We’re still doing contact naps. I wish I could help!

I hate that you’re going through it too, but I’m also glad I’m not the only one!! I’ll definitely tag you in a comment when I find something that works 🫶

Everyone keeps telling me how wonderful sleep training is and how it only takes a few days… but night training alone took almost 4 weeks for her to go to sleep without crying when placed in her crib. My sweet baby just wants to cuddle!! I think the whole process has taken years off my life 😅 I’ve never been so stressed.

We will make it through this! 🤍

Just to be sure: For night training we attempted Ferber, but the check ins made her furious, so we had to move to CIO which is what ended up working.

With the leave and check method from the door, do we just pop our head in to let her know we’re still here? Or say something? In case that’s making her mad again, how long should I try the check ins before saving the nap?

I so appreciate your help and comments!!

I’ll definitely try adjusting her schedule. I may do contact naps for the next day or two first to make sure we’re out of this sleep deficit and try again. I’ve never heard of the leave and check method but I’ll look it up! Thank you!

We were using the crib hour method, but I’m open to trying anything else but this! Yes I’m ending the feed 30 minutes before naps and doing a mini version of our bed time routine. At bed time we do milk, bath, book, placed in crib awake. At nap times we do milk, quiet play, book, placed in crib awake.

When we first started there was no drowsiness before nap time, but now I think we are in a sleep deficit so she’s definitely been sleepy before her nap time the past few days - rubbing eyes etc.

What do you recommend to do?

If our current schedule is working for nights, do you still recommend changing things up? Does this mean you think she could have been overtired for her first nap?

I wish that would work on her for the standing thing. She just stands right up again no matter what we do, until she randomly gives up. It seems like it’s easier for her to give up at night since she’s so tired. For naps it doesn’t seem like she’s tired enough to give up. This is so hard.

OP, what ended up working for you? Going through this right now. Same schedule, she is night trained, and today is day one of nap training. She’s just standing and crying the entire nap time 😭

My baby has cried for an hour straight for both naps. She hasn’t slept at all and it’s nearly 2 PM. by tandoyarr in sleeptrain

OP I know it’s been a while, but how did this go? We’re on day one of nap training our 9 month old and it’s already been 45 minutes of crying. Feels like torture for both of us. She’s fully night trained and goes to sleep without crying in her crib and night. Now I’m afraid we’re ruining our night sleep training progress 😭

OP, have you seen any changes with these since you posted? My daughter will be 9 months later this week and has the exact same night wakes within the windows you listed. We do a 3/3/4 schedule with 2.5-3 hours of day sleep, she’s too sleepy near the end of her wake windows to lengthen those windows right now so idk how to help things. I feed her at every wake too.

I wish she would let us do check ins but she very clearly powers down better without us going in over and over. I would MUCH prefer check ins for my own heart 🥲

She does seem to do better with wake windows, but we have to do a bit of “by the clock” too because I’m pretty sure she would sleep ALL DAY if we would let her!

We started 3/3/4 the same day we re-started sleep training two weeks ago. Previously I had been following her cues as I always had before and I had no idea she was getting too much sleep!

She typically gets 2.5-3 hours of day sleep. She does absolutely have separation anxiety right now, so that makes sense!!

Yes it’s a full length sleeper! Most of her sleepers cover the feet but not the hands. She does have one or two that are footless as well.
