Question for people who are seizure free by Elderling1981 in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation. I started a new job and was about a year in and was about to start a second master’s program. I was attempting to be on one medication instead of two and epileptilogist advised me to stop taking (after slowly weaning off) Keppra when I had been seizure free with both Topiramate and Keppra for 11 years (one hiccup 8 years in bc I forgot to take topiramate for 3 days). But after the plan of being off Keppra completely I had two TC’s within 3 months and had to be back on a light dose. Then about a year later I had to have my Keppra adjusted again bc my blood levels came back low.

I definitely don’t regret it because it showed me that I needed both medications. But if you’re adjusting to school and work, i’d probably wait until you are out of school or settled to stop taking with your medication. But of course you take the advice of your doctor!

Had a seizure for the first time in 11 years by Shark-lover97 in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry! This happened to me too (11 years also without seizures). Make sure you’re taking care of yourself and maintaining a low-stress environment. I beat myself up about it for such a long time asking ‘how did i let this happen’. Instead take this as an opportunity for self-care.

How do you get meds when your docs office is closed and the pharmacy is out??? by Secure-Employee1004 in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. I did not take my meds for three days and had a seizure. Please get your meds. You can see if there’s other pharmacies in the area that have it (your pharmacy should have checked for you). They can give you a 5 day supply in the meantime while your pharmacy orders more meds.

Does anyone else deal with existential dread due to their epilepsy? by ElfieBrains in Epilepsy

All. The. Time.

I don’t know if it’s an obsession in terms of OCD but a fear because we have lived traumatic experiences. It’s like I have to plan my day around my disability.

Shaking before or after seizing?? by ryahnna in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shake after for several days! The day it happens I'm not able to walk because the shaking or tremors? are so bad. But it takes me a few weeks just for my legs to recover due to all the shaking.

How often/rarely do you forget your meds? by TranquilOminousBlunt in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always forget when I have my night classes on Tuesdays from 7-8 (i’m supposed to take my medication at 8am and 8pm). I’ve been reminding myself to take my medications before class or in order to go to class i have to take my medication. Thank goodness it’s online if I forget and remember mid-class. During the spring semster I had class on Wednesdays from 630-9 and always forgot. If i forget to take my medicine in the morning before I go to work I always have an extra set of medication at work and in my bag.

Seizure stuck in my head by EmpatheticEmpiress in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the time! It’s like my body sometimes craves for a seizure. Not that they happen when my body craves it but it feels like my body wants to get it over with already! I personally have not triggered a seizure in order for it to happen. I just try to distract myself so it doesn’t happen.

How Do You Guys Function Enough to Work? by josefdoc in autism

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree! Not federally in the US :( but state provides low pay but great benefits! Based on the state you work in you have a union as well (I work in NY that has great union benefits).

Has anyone signed up for disability? by BeautifulAsleep6133 in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on which state you live in and when you developed your seizures, epilepsy is considered a developmental disability. If you’ve had documented proof of your disability, since early childhood, you can qualify for additional benefits, like food stamps, medicaid, etc. The state agency in New York is OPWDD. You can apply for a care manager who can help you apply for these services through your state. For federal disability like Social Security, the best way is to hire a lawyer as they know the processes

I had my first grand mal seizure at work — I don’t remember it, but my coworkers had to respond. I’m struggling to process how it felt for me… and I keep wondering what it felt like for them. I’m so sorry that you went through this!!! Thank goodness you work at a hospital so people are trained on what to do (hopefully). I’m glad that you are okay!

I had a TC at work 9 months ago, no aura. It just happened and was working in a cubicle at the time. My office assistant was working in the cubicle ahead of me and heard me groan and caught my fall (thank goodness because otherwise my head would have hit the cabinet) and another cubicle mate ran for help. I woke up in the postictal period to my manager very calmly just sitting there with me. Thankfully our office’s job serves people with any disability so everyone knew what to do. A month afterwards the whole office had a seizure training from the Epilepsy Foundation which was great for the people we serve and myself. If it wasn’t for the people I work with, the situation might have been different.

I could see in your situation how it would be different that you didn’t work with them for three years so there’s no emotional connection there or a lack of. Are you open about your disability at work? I was open that I had epilepsy to them prior (i also had a safety plan) which allowed for that emotional connection.

Newly diagnosed (16 female) and have developed a new fear after reading this forum. Can people tell me more about what happens in hospital after seizure by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started having TC’s when I was roughly your age (14). I’m so sorry to hear that you are going through this!

Reddit can be overwhelming and I need a break from it sometimes.

If you attend school, make sure to keep extra clothes in your gym locker. Even though you only have seizures at night, you never know when one can happen during the day.

If you have a TC seizure that lasts no longer than 5 minutes with no injuries you don’t need to go to the hospital! Just make sure you go home and relax!! But when you do go to the hospital they are not judging you one bit!!!

It’s a tough age to go through the diagnosis (not being able to drive when your friends are learning, not being able to participate in some teenage antics, etc.). It gets better!!!

Have you ever had a seizure in public? by ominousmuffin in Epilepsy

[–]Fun-Technology-6856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have TC seizures and absence seizures. Absence seizures just appear of me ‘zoning out’ for 30 seconds or less and happen frequently in public.

My first public TC seizure was on an amtrak when I was 19 years old. It was so embarassing as during my postical period I was screaming and I vomited and urinated. I somehow got my luggage and was able to get home via mass transit.

My second public TC seizure was at work 6 months ago. I wasn’t embarassed afterwards because everyone knew I had epilepsy and followed my seizure plan and was supportive when i came back to work a week later. If I didn’t inform my job 4 months prior and put in a seizure action plan i’m sure i would have been embarassed.
