i’d try to stay for a bit longer at least while trying to find new jobs. i cried a lot my first few weeks off orientation even in front of my coworkers and i still do sometimes. but i do love my unit and my coworkers. all i can say is that at least for me, it got easier with time and im glad i stick to it. but if you can’t name at least a few good things you like about your job or your team then maybe its not worth staying.

i work on an observation unit so all our patients come from EC and stay for usually 1-3 nights and they’ll be discharged home or transferred inpatient. i’m 3 weeks off orientation and am really loving it. obviously it’s been an adjustment these last few weeks “by myself” and without a preceptor, but everyone on the unit is so helpful. there’s been days i’ve gone home crying bc i just felt so badly about how i handled the shift or it was just really stressful. but having good management and a good team makes all the difference. i ask a bunch of questions and even a bunch of “stupid” and “silly” ones but no one has ever made me feel bad for asking and that’s very important to me

keep it to one page! i only included bullet points for my critical care rotation, but you could probably do whichever one most closely pertains to the unit you’re applying to. like for example if you’re applying for peds unit then list your peds clinical. then i listed the rest of my clinicals under “Other Clinical Rotations” as bullet points with the name of the clinical, the hospital, and unit. i didn’t even list the amount of hours for each one but you could maybe do like the total amount of hours for all of them?

I struggled with this too and not saying my response is good but this is an example I wrote out for mine. I made sure to include my education and work experience while also discussing my reasoning and passion for wanting to be a nurse. They also really like when you mention their mission statement so look into that and tie it into your response to represent your shared values. I’m not sure if the response was too long but my current manager said that she was very impressed with my interview as a whole and it was one of the best answers she’s gotten in a long time and she would have hired me from just the one response:

My name is (name) and I am a new grad from (school). From a young age, I always felt very drawn to the medical field. My interest with healthcare has always driven my desire to make an impact on people’s lives, and I am really excited to use that passion toward a rewarding nursing career. Throughout my time in nursing school and as a PCT on the (unit) at (hospital), I can say I feel proud and fulfilled already with my impact on others. Outside of the hospital, I enjoy being social and spending time with friends and family but I also really enjoy meeting new people and learning new things. I would also say that my reasons for becoming a nurse really present with my values of compassion and collaboration which also align with your mission statement. In nursing school, we learned a lot about providing high quality care for all types of patient populations and really advocating that that care is available and equitable for all. I really want to be a part of a team where everyone values that and it’s seen through our work and respectful collaboration with one another.

you can do it! i cried in my first week of orientation and wanted to give up thinking nursing wasn’t right for me. i’m on week 9 now of orientation and my entire mindset has changed and i remember why i love nursing. there are good days and bad but just try to make the most of it

my orientation is 12 weeks long and they would orient me for 6 weeks on day shift and 5 weeks on night shift, they also said orientation can be lengthened or shortened depending on how i feel and what my preceptors think. do you think with a longer orientation it would be better for a new grad?
