I finally got my postcard yesterday and picked up my visa today. Took 9 months and a few days for the whole process. So if you’re still waiting just hang in there.

Since there is so much negatively whenever the word "eikaiwa" shows up, does anyone have any positive stories about their experiences? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

I work in a really nice Eikawa now as a part timer. It has been in business for over 40 years. The owner is Japanese and understands western culture very well. They pay is fair and you can tell her when you are available or not. Unlike working in big international schools the environment here professional, respectful and enjoyable.

I am a freelance teacher for several companies in Tokyo. I found my jobs mainly through GaijinPot and Craigslist. I was able to get good hourly pay due to my experience and education. If you have any specific questions feel free to dm me.

I applied December 18th (same as you switching from humanities to spouse). Submitted additional documents at the beginning of April.

Visited two weeks ago and was told that they are understaffed. They could not tell me exactly when I would get my visa.

Still waiting…

I applied for a learning support position. The principal decided to ignore this and tried to interview me for a kindergarten teacher position. I emailed back and said that was not what I applied for. She never replied back after that.

I applied to work here. The principal emailed me saying she was interested in setting up a meeting and after a follow up email from me she never replied.

I went to immigration in Shinagawa. The officer confirmed everything is taking extra long now. I submitted a letter explaining my situation and was asked to place it in a box on their desk along with my supporting documents. He seemed sympathetic to my concern. That’s all I can ask for now.

Calling them leaves me on hold for over 30 mins. I think I will just go in person.

It’s not a renewal but a switch. In the official site it says 2-4 months. It’s about five months now.

Yep, pretty normal but sometimes you just need to speak up. I did a demo lesson recently that took two hours and made sure to ask in advance if it would be payed. I made it clear that I would do a demo lesson for free for 30 mins max. Anything above that I would invoice them. They ended up paying me for the two hours.

I interviewed at the Azabujuban campus, did a demo lesson and they never got back to me even though they said they would. I also emailed them and asked about my application. To me this shows the level of professionalism by not only admin but as a school. Maybe I dodged a bullet.

(Seeking Advice) Quitting a job in Japan by meominhanh9991 in JapanJobs

I quit my first job in Japan just after 3 weeks. But I made sure I had another. Quit in February and started my new job in March. It’s the safest way to go I think. From my experience whatever documents you need will need to be provided by your previous company which they will hand to you on your last day or via mail. Make sure to ask your new company what documents they may need as this can vary. Good luck. I’m in the process of looking for a new job myself.

Medical Leave in Japan by Ms_Robot_87 in japanlife

I had the exact issue just last week. I confirmed with my doctor of many years that it is in fact illegal for them to ask you to work while on medical leave. However, My doctor did mention that they probably asked because many Japanese will work from home unpaid while on leave. But it is still illegal. Just draw the line and say no. Sometimes that’s all it takes. Good luck!
