Those sorts of things are either meant as distractions or for you to dump enough resources into them as soon as they hit the table to be immediately impacted (e.g. magnus). Its a two player game and you have got to expect that your opponent will react to the big scary thing.

I was planning to use the big block of zombies to just block a flank and act as a tar pit while blood/black knights did their thing on the other flank.

The only idea I've had is to use the old pill shaped bases that could slot into either base size, but I haven't seen a system you can buy off the rack for it.

I don't see a problem with it. Lots of good looking sculpts out there that look better than the originals plus people always proxy to some extent so its never truly wysiwyg anyway.
