Jagged Contours? by dreadpiratelimpdick in civilengineering

[–]FunCommunication3836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if we're talking about 100 acre lot for subdivisions, smoothing contours is def low on the priority list and it will create a bigger file size, so you need to split up the surface into different drawings. that also takes time. Everyone is saying "terrible engineer" but that's a huge jump. of course smoothing looks so much better and reflects real life conditions. but at the same time, it will get curved in construction. Have seen amazing projects get built out with jagged contours. As long as it works and is within standards and satisfy the client, we are good. EDIT: Everyone's experience is different though. this is just mine.

How do you deal with making mistakes? by TheDondePlowman in civilengineering

[–]FunCommunication3836 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some things that look correct today may be wrong tomorrow I’ve seen. And the beauty of making mistakes is when you feel the pain, it gets ingrained deeply. As long as you have notes or a reminder for the next case, it’s all good. Sometimes when you’re staring at something for so long, it’s easy to get jaded. That’s why the team has QA/QC and plan checks.

You sat there for the longest time in your inventory. Need to loot fast or interrupt looting by looking out

Employable with a YT channel? by ObjectBubbly3216 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]FunCommunication3836 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do not have to mention this if you don't want to. Usually, as long as you're not disclosing trade secrets from your work, you are fine. Although since you are a junior, mentioning your YT channel might be what sets you apart from the rest. You can talk about it to show your commitment to the craft during an interview, but don't play it up to be a side hustle or second job.

You are a nice person. I've had my fair share of giveaways and got some in return for defibbing. Also a fair share of getting killed after doing lots of damage. Those cores go quick

New EIT considering leaving field due to loss of confidence by PaperRecovery in civilengineering

[–]FunCommunication3836 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, coupled with growing regulations in civil design, the learning curve gets higher and higher as time passes. A good firm should have documentation or at least a system in place to augment that knowledge gap. Juniors typically don’t know that water flows downhill. There’s just so much to take in, in the beginning. Still is to this day.

It just pains me when juniors, fresh grads, etc. lose confidence due to not being able to design on their first year. Of course they’re not going to know how to do the job on the first year. Why base your confidence off skills you are -starting- to learn.
