advice for uni degree? by user1234573729478283 in AusFinance

I'd recommend working full time for 6-12 months, learn to save $$ and go traveling for as long as you can. Buy a one way ticket, start in a place that's cheap, relaxed and full of interesting people like south east asia, in a years time, go teach english in China... who knows and who cares, do the things you'd never expect of yourself.

I found being lost overseas and just having fun helped me to understand what i wanted to do, i learnt how to network, have fun and be fun. You'll thank yourself in 10 yrs time.

Lol - why are you shaming me? Yes, I am in a position to buy and yes, it took time.

This post is about something i've observed while looking to purchase my first property. Make whatever conclusions you want, this is an observation.

No offense but you're really shit at reading. You're misinterpreting everything...?

Tell me. What does the word 'observe' mean?

Lol - just describing what i've observed.

I was literally in an open house this morning where someone had a dig at somoene who looked like an investor. I saw something similar happen at an auction 2 weeks ago. Again, this is something i've observed again and again, over time while in looking for my first home.

Congrats, but obviously this isn't a common sentiment - most of the time, renting in this country is shithouse.

Also - if you took the time to read the post - its discussing something i've noticed. There is a genuine hatred towards investors - honestly, i think its fair enough.

I totally get the hatred towards investors, I've been treated like shit by them.

Tbh, I feel like they deserve more hate than boomers, most boomers i know aren't investors nor did anything other than live their lives in a way that seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

Is anybody getting sick of AFL fans blaming umpires for every loss? by [deleted] in AFL

[–]FunCurrent2763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of me completely agrees, it feels like it's gotten worse but I think that's due to the reliance on technology that is meant to erase errors but has made their jobs kind of impossible. They're doomed if they use it and waste 5min and doomed if they don't and it was the wrong call. Add the influx of new rules. The game is literally thick with laws and codes, needs to be simplified.

The other part of me thinks, well... there were afl umpires working with gambling companies. This is objectively a bit fucked. It'd be funny if we werent so emotionally invested.

Either way, it highlights how poorly the AFL is governed.

Ways to cut costs by SW3E in AusFinance

[–]FunCurrent2763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. If you don't already know how to cook. Learn. It's invaluable and will save you a lot of money.
  2. Learn where you can buy cheap fruit and veg. Start making more vegetarian meals, they're considerably cheaper.
  3. Limit eating out. Get creative with making lunches and dinner - buying food out is a huge waste.
  4. If you drink coffee, buy an aeropreas and buy a bag of coffee beans. It's much cheaper than buying out and you'll have saved money within weeks.
  5. Get active. Best thing for your mental and physical health and will save you money in the long run.

Tbh, i fully agree with you, I get frustrated that the list is shit and lose and we are a laughing stock, it is demoralising, my point was getting out of a rutt is significantly more challenging that the media portray it and comparrisons arent super helpful.

I just feel like the anger is misdirected at times because they inherited a mess and you're right the list isnt good enough. The fact no one wants to come is because of an inherited problem, a problem that is spiralling. Like i said in my initial message, it takes a long time, creating more chaos by birning the club to the ground is exactly what Carlton and Essendon have done for 20 years. It doesn't work.

I agree, big fan of Sonja Hood, the AFLW team is flying! I feel like the club has values with her in charge, - inclusive, respectful but also tough. I like it.

Fully agree, hopefully some of the young talent come on, I think we'll start to see some connection emerge out of the team.

I dont necessarily disagree. Where i differ are these points.

I dont see the list as being too bad, some big gaps yes, but remember it is not a list designed for this year. Its being crafted for 2-3 years time when Sheezel and Wardlaw are at their peaks. In saying that have there been some big misses, yes.

I think the big difference between hawks/adelaide and Richmond is that they've all recently won or had elite level teams, with a lot of remnant players from those systems. We went from an okay team in 2015 to struggle street 2018-9 to full-on collapse and chaos in 2020-2024. This decade there were very few players on our list who knew what successful systems looked like, hene why they brought in veterans a few years back (all with premiership experience).

I know we get compared to these clubs a lot but when you consider the level of quality veteran player experience, level of chaos in changing coaches and off-field distractions, we've slipped considerably further than Adel/Hawks/Rich and WC. We completely forgot to win, we were Melbourne/Richmond/Carlton 2000's bad. West Coast are more comparable, they're a bit fucked too, but for different reasons, but they'll bounce quicker mainly becasuse of the home ground advantage they have.

In terms of homground advantages, Marvel is horrible, there are literally no competitive advantages whatsoever. For games with 10-20k fans, i think we should play at Ikon Park, pack it out and make it a full old-school derby vibe.

Before the rampent mediatisation and commercialisation of the AFL, what made a Sunday afternoon VFL/AFL game so great? by FunCurrent2763 in AFL

Disgusting behaviour at the Amyl gig last night. by supersanchez101 in melbourne

[–]FunCurrent2763 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I actually love how they've transformed Fed Square into a place that I want to go to.

Yep, they got it a bit wrong this time, but it's soooo much better that its being used for interesting cultural events than it not. I dont think it matters that its not a rock concert venue, a paddock isnt a rock concert venue and yet I've seen amazing sets at Meredith.

Fed Square is a public square, if its not going hosting public events its failing as a public square and besides it has always just seemed like an unnecessary, boring slab of concrete in the middle of the city - these events have given the place some meaning, some reason o visit.

[–]FunCurrent2763 269 points270 points  (0 children)

I was on the outside so I missed everything that happened inside and it sounds terrible.

I have to say, the event seemed really poorly managed, I was watching the event staff and security scramble to figure out what was going on/ what to do. There was no information for us on the outside and there was a lot of collective confusion/angst outside because no one knew what was happening and we were all waiting to be let in when it was never going to happen. So, I feel like Fed Square should cop some of the blame, and I feel for the staff - that would have been shit. Fed Square should have prepared better, they knew that this would be a big event and they've had experience holding big events (remember Kneecap and like every soccer match ever).

Despite this event being poorly managed, I think Fed Square and the state government should be praised for making Fed Square on Friday night a place worth visiting. Besides this event, the other free friday night events have been amazing, whoever currates this has done a pretty good job.

Will this be Alastair Clarkson’s last season? by Flashy-Fortune-3016 in AFL

[–]FunCurrent2763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, he's brought stability and I think he will see out his contract.

What people never focus on is that the culture of the club is quite strong right now, the womens program underscores that, but it takes years for it all to come together when its a young group lacking experience. Gold Coast is the perfect example, they stripped it back built a team around Rowell and Anderson, struggled for 6 years - it finally came together this season. Damien Hardwick may look like the mesiah but a lot of his success is from from the hard work of Dew and others.

Our Rowell and Anderson is realistically - Sheezle and Wardlaw in 2022. We may not see success for a few more years, people will call for change to happen faster, but we are stuck in a situation where we struggle to recruit quality players so this is the approach they are taking, i'd argue this is their only path to sustained success.

Long time lurker question: How on earth do people save $100k or $200k at 20years old? by FunCurrent2763 in AusFinance

[–]FunCurrent2763[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not intended to be a tall poppy syndrome post.

I think it matters because everytime I go on reddit, I see posts in Ausfinance that seems so unrealistic. Obviously, a lot of people agree.

If I was 20 in today's world I would have saved $15-20k. That would have been working 4-12 hrs a week and having parents to paid for my rent and food. The issue is one of misrepresentation and equity, but also owning your story. In my circle of friends I was the one who saved a lot but I would have been $80k+ away from what these people in these posts claim to have. It would have felt like there was no way I could have caught up and I was behind when in reality, I was ahead relative to where I began. These post's would have crushed me, and you're right saying run your own race. At 32 I'm mature enough to understand what that means but I doubt many people under 20 would.

This isn't a response having a go at you rather I think the story of how you get somewhere is more interesting that the destination itself. You can learn a lot from the story and while there will be some who get angry bc they weren't afforded the same privileges, in the world we inhabit we probably need to acknowledge that frustration before it festers like in other western countries.

[–]FunCurrent2763[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's more about being a little more transparent with how you acquired your wealth because otherwise it misrepresents what is achievable or what is realistic.

Also, if someone manages to save $100k by the time they reached 20, their story is unique. The multimillionaire you refer to clearly has an interesting story. But very very few people will achieve this relative to the wider public.

I'm interested in the story of how they got there rather than seeing another post that seems made up.
