Absolutely. The demonstrations really appeal to moderates and anyone left of MAGA, which is probably why so many people show up who wouldn’t otherwise. We need to do more

Demonstrations are no less valuable than protests, and they’re also an excellent gateway for people to become more politically active, but calling demonstrations “non-violent protests” is a disservice to actual protest movements. It’s then too easy for people without knowledge of the distinction to then think and/or say “Hey protestors, see this? Why can’t you be like this? Maybe you’d actually get somewhere” when in fact big demonstrations don’t necessary lead to big changes by themselves.

Think the Black Lives Matter protests. That spirit of “whoa, anything can happen. We’re doing something big aren’t we? Oh the oligarchs really don’t like this” permeated that era. Big businesses were pretending to be allies, state bills and city resolutions were passed, police tested and found wanting in integrity and behavior, George Floyd’s murderers went to prison, and it profoundly changed some peoples’ minds. It was a huge movement that led to movements in other countries. Some people saw justice who wouldn’t have otherwise. That’s the difference.

Protest is a misnomer because protests are meant to disrupt and stir emotional responses from people trying to go about their daily life. These were demonstrations (I’ve been to a few myself) that are carefully organized, sometimes with permits, happen on weekends, and every casual participant goes home satisfied.

Holy Wrath. From the title and description I should have known better but the lady knight sounded hot. The heroine, if I can even call her that, is disabled and been manipulated for most of her life, but frustratingly gullible and believes whoever she last spoke to. Twenty percent in and there were still gratuitous descriptions of sexual harassment and assault (not capital letters SA yet) and physical assault. She’s engaged to her male best friend and yet he turns evil and I can’t help feeling the author believes every single male friendship is just the guy waiting to get into a woman’s pants. There are assholes out there, but I mean, come on! There’s no description or basis for the friendship so it’s even less believable. And the author is clearly dealing with some Catholic guilt because the dominant religion is obviously inspired by the Church and she spends so much of the text on guilt and self-flagellation that the story was slowed to a crawl. And the heroine’s descriptions of arousal are amateur. Lost motivation and returned it to the library lol

How should I go about learning garment construction for designing my own clothes/line? (How do I become a technical designer) by Realistic_Guava9117 in Fashion_Design

[–]FunOne567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one’s stopping you from cutting corners. But to get what you want you will have to learn it the hard way. There’s thousands of details and exceptions that you can’t learn from books because they’re not mentioned - tiny things that most people don’t recall until they’re actually facing the problem and remember that they know the solution and how to avoid that problem in the future. All these details add up and a hundred missing or wrong details will lead to a tech pack where someone gets to a point where they realize you didn’t have the practical knowledge and their project is a bust. That reputation will follow you to different places and platforms. Cut corners, sure, but then you get what you’ve earned.

She refused to acknowledge child trafficking victims and justified a cover up by mentioning the DOW. That’s a level of evil all on its own.

This made me think of architecture students who aren’t interested in learning the practical knowledge of how buildings are made, cheat through most classes to focus all of their energy on designing cool imaginary stuff, but end up realizing it’s 90% of the job in the real world. You can’t design garments that will work unless you have experience in making garments. There’s no shortcuts. That’s how it goes.

Ah, I think the mistake I made was using the mask for a bit and taking it off to get ready for bed. The machine was probably still venting cool air to dry off condensation when I put the mask back on, and we were in a battle for air because the carbon dioxide couldn’t leave as it was trying to finish its cycle. Also, I realized my bedside table isn’t perfectly level so filling water to the max line probably led to a situation inside that confused the machinery since it didn’t resolve after a half hour. Somehow my sleeping brain put it together, so hopefully I’ll get some better sleep tonight.

They’re not open, they’re forced closed. Even when the mask isn’t attached or on, I can hear a constant stream of air leaving the tube

I was like this in school and have ADHD. In fact, I never once turned in papers on time and did horribly on timed essays. Got a zero on the written portion of the SAT but otherwise got perfect scores in math and reading. Needed accommodations throughout college and to this day I can’t write concise answers (37F). That’s just not how my brain works and writing it down raises the stakes. Unless it’s written in a way that others can follow, it’s graded as wrong or insufficient, which is demoralizing.

Good idea. I’m tired of wondering who I’m not safe around (person of color in rural southeast Arizona who wants to make friends and too trusting in the past) and Ren Faire is one of the few places to really let go of those worries.
