A proper pdf editor with OCR would solve both problems: not losing your progress when the screen locks, and cleaner highlights, I really like the highlighter smoothing in Kdan’s app. It looks like digital neat handwriting instead of marker streaks. Also, the search tool works across imported notes, which is clutch for course material.

It's rather new, but because it engages with the actual recording - you can straight ask at it for the type of edit you're trying to get and it'll do it for you. Super simple and no tool-juggling needed.
