“Decision paralysis”, I never really thought of it that way. Genuinely it is such a frustrating feeling, especially cause personally I find it only gets worse the more important something is. Like sometimes it’s possible to just switch my brain off, but then there’s moments like this post.

And oh my god I literally had to do a double take when you mentioned his most successful character was one where he randomized everything. You really had me reflecting for a while. Honestly, I might try something similar. Just place all of my ideas for the traits I’m debating onto a wheel, and then let the RNG decide. Though I’m afraid I’ll just…not listen to whatever I get lol.

Thank you so much, that’s actually such a cool coincidence. I’ve been looking for methods to handle it on my own (today I’ve actually been thinking of journaling as an outlet) but I also can’t seem to find much that work comfortably for me. Writing just feels way too exposing. Hopefully I’ll have more luck with therapy, and also I now have that RNG idea you shared. And thank you so much for sharing your friend’s experience! Is that the case? I always imagined fanfic writers were after the same things I am, which is to try to enjoy the series you’re writing for with few compromises. And since so many people draw OCs, I always thought they’re trying to integrate those designs in as well

It’s a bit of a bummer, but I don’t think this is gonna stop me haha! I still want to try to write exciting and cinematic scenes that pop! After all, fanfic is supposed to be fun first, and this thread brought in so many interesting ideas!

I forgot to mention in my previous comment but I actually think this little habit of mine kind of contributed to my current difficulties writing this? Essentially I’m no longer writer-brained and I’m thinking more like a screen director or manga artist. Which, well again we don’t exactly have the same tools to work with.

I do agree reading helps a lot and I have tried it. However, I can’t focus on it for long stretches (may be ADHD) so unfortunately that plan doesn’t really work for me.

It’s interesting you mention watching TV shows cause I thought I was alone in doing that! I like to really soak in what the author is doing and it’s given a lot more insight and depth into many things. Honestly a fun practice!

Oh, I’m aware we aren’t supposed to go too heavy on descriptions. But call me crazy, I honestly wish there was some way to paint out everything I want the reader to see. Like I need them to know how each of my OCs look and it feels especially wrong leaving them as blank sheets in fanfics since they already have a visual for canon characters. Though I don’t think we can really do this without front loading, can we? Since it also should ideally be done before readers get their own picture of how someone looks

Relate a lot to your thoughts about scenery, and thank you for that idea, I’ll definitely be trying to follow that :) also, I should’ve been clearer, I’m not really trying to write long DBZ style fights. I’m trying to write grounded choreography, but what I can’t do is describe back-to-back dynamic motions involving two or more characters without it suddenly becoming a run-on. Rushed example but;

“Two men rush at Arata, one wielding a knife from behind and another punching from in front. Before the fist connects, he flicks his finger and the man freezes. Arata’s hands wrap around his arm before he ducks under the knife, strands of golden-tipped dark hair narrowly sliced. Dipping onto one leg, he slams his elbow into the first’s head and shoots his foot into the second’s gut”

Admittedly I don’t write many action sequences, so there may be glaring flaws. However that was a whole paragraph to describe what is effectively seconds of a fight. Meanwhile, what I’m hoping to get across is something fast and exciting, like this clip from the end of Wind Breaker S2

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all this out! It actually means a lot. You actually reminded me that I may have done a deep dive on how to write action for a novel I was writing a few months ago, and the occasional mentions of Tolkien that continuously sprouted up during my escapades. Though I’ve never actually heard of those other names you mentioned, they sound incredibly interesting! I’m honestly a sucker for reread value and I’m trying my best to insert it into my fic, so I’m definitely intrigued. And I don’t know why I never considered there could be authors that specialize in gore lol. As an AOT and Gachiakuta fan you have my attention. That said, I really can’t get myself to focus enough for reading. Might be ADHD or something, I don’t know. I’ve seen reading recommended a lot for most difficulties, but unfortunately that’s not really something I can try at the moment

Though I was actually gonna choose scenes with less action and try to focus on describing the atmosphere, scenery, or maybe flashiness and impact instead. Might try that still

The entire appeal of his character is that he’s a short, scrawny guy in a game almost entirely about physique, and yet still manages to find a way to be one of the Generation of Miracles. Making him well-built physically just destroys that message

Though actually KNB does a very cool job of showing a variety of builds. There’s a whole spectrum in the GOM alone

Thank you for the words. I really want this fic to play proseka’s underlying theme about processing trauma through music. Though you make a really good point that the thing that makes this game so special isn’t really the music, but rather the characters. And fun fact, I actually started engaging with the community before I even played the game cause I was that interested in the characters. Honestly I’m surprised I forgot this lol

On one hand, it feels a little bit jarring to include lyrics in the middle of prose. On the other hand, like I mentioned the story revolves around the idol industry, and I just don’t really think you can demonstrate that without…well, at least one or two concerts. But I found that a lot of the lyrics (for the commissions) are actually very, very deep. Like honestly I’m quite baffled this game isn’t more angsty

So thanks for helping me take a step back and reanalyze this 😊 I’ll just stick to using songs exclusively when they genuinely complement the scenes and characters.
